The Martian Spacesuit Project Lives!

It’s finally time to resume work on The Martian spacesuit costume build! In the two years since we last checked in on the project, Frank Ippolito has moved into a new shop and has been chipping away on 3D printing crucial parts to the costume. Adam spends the day at Frank’s shop to survey the pieces and start work on the helmet! (Thanks to Frank and his team for keeping this project alive in the midst of their busy shop schedule! Check out more of Thingergy’s projects here.)

  1. This is an awesome build!

It’s obvious that everyone is really enjoying this. Please do not wait another 3 years to have the next review.

  2. I’d love to see the Tested crews using more PPE (personal protective equipment). Namely hearing protection and safety glasses, when for example using tools like air sanders. Professionals working in a professional environment not using PPE is unprofessional. As I tell my kids, eyes and ears don’t heal. One bit of loose material or a failed sanding accessory will blind, air motors cause imperceptible but cumulative hearing loss. At my work failure to wear PPE is cause for corrective action, there is zero excuse. Lead by example!

  3. Thank you so much for this video. In the opening 5 minutes Frank has confirmed for me what I’ve been toying with for the past 6 months. Spray poly casting, 3D printed molding, and most importantly that no matter how big your operation getting a good finish involves elbow-grease, sanding, and priming on repeat.

  4. Thank you to Adam and Tested for this. As someone who just finished building their own 3D printer (still honing it in)… this is the sort of stuff I love to see.
It’s not kid in a candy shop… it’s kid in a candy factory being able to put the products together.
It’s lovely seeing the sheer joy of those involved as they get to bring these things to life and enjoy the result of their hard work.
I should say thanks to Frank too… it’s lovely to see him far more in his element than the days of Face Off… I have shop envy for both his and Adam’s amazing work spaces!

  5. Holy crap this is such a cool build. So awesome to see the processes involved and how everything goes together. Need to show this to my youngest son as The Martian is his favorite film- he’s seen it 12 times. 🙂

  6. Just want to say I’m glad to see Frank back! I’m happy that he’s doing well and staying busy, but I miss his contributions 😉

  7. Wow this screams, expeeeeeensive (which might also be part of the hold-up)! 🙂 Really really cool to see though, awesome modern shop.

  8. hahaha.. every other week or so, while watching the latest build, “Hmm, I wonder what ever happened to that Martian suit?”

  9. So glad to see Frank back on Tested! This build looks amazing! Hope you guys can take some time on some of the pieces of the build and don’t just fast montage past it all.

  10. I just watched the Behind the scenes video on Disney+ for season 2 of The Mandolorian. Frank gets a call out from the costume designer Shawna Trpcic when they’re showing off a creature Frank built for the episode. So we now know why there’s no progress on The Martian spacesuit. Frank’s off in a galaxy far far away.

    1. Yeah, that’s why, lol. Those Martian parts are on a shelf shoved in a corner, covered in two years-worth of dust. Additionally, I think the lady who was working on the undersuit quit the company.
