Jeremy’s Internet-Connected ScreenTimer Project!
Jeremy shares an internet-connected timer he made to help keep track of his kids’ screen time. Using a Particle Photon and custom PCB, this simple count down timer can be programmed and configured remotely, as well as control power to an AC device! Find the bill of materials and code here!

Great little project, though I think Jeremy is being a bit too nice by not implementing the consequences :p
I’d have put a siren once it ticked below 1 minute, and if they didn’t save their progress then, they’d lose it to a system shutdown. Give them some ways to earn more time, and let it roll over so they take a day off without losing time, and I think it would be a fun metagame.
instead of cutting power, i think it makes more sense to have HDMI in and HDMI out on your box.
When the timer is paused, the game system’s output to the TV would be cut off.
If you wanted to get Really fancy, it could output its own signal displaying a message like “Timer Paused”

You could put an Internet connected scale underneath the trash bin and if the kids take the garbage out it adds 15 minutes to their game!

BTW – been using teensy’s on a few projects lately. What great little boards. Thanks for mentioning them on the podcast a while back. I usually use nano knockoffs for simple stuff but when I need a little extra the teensy boards are perfect.

Ok… I need something like this between my stationary bike and the backlight on my tv… time gets added while I pedal, clock counts down while I don’t… gets to zero and power to the backlight is cut and the screen goes black.
