Behind the Scenes: How We Light Our Videos!

Tested producers Joey and Adam Isaak give you a behind-the-scenes look at our lighting setup in the Tested studio and on location. Here’s how our videos are lit using a combination of fluorescent, tungsten, and LED sources. Plus, Joey and Adam discuss the Fotodiox Pro FlapJack, a new bi-color studio light that we’ve been liking a lot!

  1. Back when i was working as a lighting tech for film,tv and concerts we used to use a lot of LEE filters CT200,201,203 were common on ground rows especially if there were cameras involved.

Funny how that was over 25 years ago yet i still remember the codes for gel colours and correction as well as the numerous lights we used to use. Fond memories of trimming arc lights at pinewood studios and building lighting rigs full of par 64’s and lekos for things like the WWF and Nirvana

  2. It’s cool to see you showcasing your lighting setup. A lot of people don’t realize how involved the lighting can be for different productions.

  3. I wonder how difficult it would be to DIY one of those Fotodiox Flapjacks. The large one with variable temp might be a little tricky, but I’ll bet Jeremy could do it.

  4. Well done, love the behind the scenes. Those led disks are great, being that I’m IATSE, this stuff is great!

  5. Nifty, also I found Joey constantly carrying his coffee in the first part to be amusing.

I’m going to have to share this one with some people that I know that do lighting.

  6. As a sound recordist of some 35 years I was delighted (no pun intended) when the kinoflow type lamps came along, it gave us a fighting chance of avoiding boom shadows on quickly made productions! Back in the day a boom op would have to navigate a sort of ‘air traffic corridor’ on the set which changed from shot to shot to avoid shadows. It didn’t help when the DOP or LD would change the lighting during a lunch break and ruin your boom plot. And a properly boomed scene always sounds better than radio mics 😉

  7. Very cool. I think it would be fun to try and DIY something like this, but I bet it would actually be rough to control the colors with such fine detail.
