Bits to Atoms: Starlords Arcade Cabinet, Part 5

Sean and Jeremy return to the Tested shop to paint and finish the cabinet and do some final testing and trouble shooting of the electronics systems. We’re starting to get some funcionality in this machine!

  1. To elaborate on the painting – use a solvent based primer vs water based. A water-based primer will raise the fibers in the MDF ruining the smooth finish. After the primer any paint can be used – we ended up doing 2 layers of latex and 2 layers of Minwax Polycrylic. Since finishing the Starlords cabinet I have discovered General Finishes polyurethane which I liked a lot better. (http://a.co/d/4W4qznA)

As stated – spraying would have been much better and what we should have done in our situation is use rollers instead of foam brushes.

  2. This whole series has been so enjoyable.

Thank you to Jeremy and Sean and all those involved behind the scenes as well.

  3. As a big arcade nerd, it’s super fun watching you guys learn/discover stuff, like t-molding and the quad trimmer. You guys are hitting all the same hurdles hobby arcade collectors and builders hit. You’re doing great!

  4. i’ve never played an arcade game; i grew up without that interest. THIS series makes me want to play this game, and watch others play it too. well done guys.

  5. It’s fun for me, too, to see the side of this project we didn’t work on – While we were coding away on the game, we missed out on a lot of this. But I totally can pinpoint the time frame as we got over the hump and we were all getting super excited!

  6. Another great episode. Bits to Atoms could be it’s own channel, really good stuff.

As an aside, not sure if it’s Chrome or the software Tested uses, but I can no longer maximise the video when using Chrome. The full screen button just doesn’t work. It’s fine when I switch to firefox.

  7. Awesome project! Bits to atoms is a great inspiration to learn new skills. I bought the Maslow CNC after it was featured on Tested, and it’s sadly still in the box waiting for me to find time.

Aspirational projects like this show us what’s possible, and motivate us to find the time to make something amazing.

  8. Shoot, I was just about to hit the bed early… 🙂 That was awesome once again, so lovely to follow this entire process!

  9. I understand why you went the solid paint route, what with everything you’ve got on your plate for this project already, however I can’t help but imagine the cabinet wrapped in a Jack Kirby-esque spacescape. Like real funky arcade cabinet/pinball backglass and side art.

  10. Call me crazy, but wasn’t there a week with no update, and then the teaser that just launched on youtube sure sounds a lot as if it was intended to drop after the full series was up… so… is the site indeed a week behind the original schedule?

  11. Loving this build! I’m looking into building some arcade cabinets in the near future that may run off of RasPis or an actual NES with a multi game cartridge. I’m getting a lot of great info here on how that process will go. Any plans to release this game to the public or possibly have the whole cabinet manufactured and available for purchase to arcades? It’s such a cool design and getting 6 people involved sounds perfect for Dave and Busters.

  12.   we’re exploring all of those options. I’d like to tidy up the software before making it available. Combined with Jeremy’s controller boards, you could easily build a home console or go the whole nine yards and make the cabinet. I’d like to provide a kit.

  13. I am really enjoying this series. Love the Bits to Atoms videos – right up my street. Keep them coming Tested Crew!

  14. Inspirational, you guys. Painting: understand the reticence to spray right on-set (!-?) but next time consider using a little paint roller!

  15. we’re hoping to release part 6 on monday! sorry for the delay, but it’ll be worth it!

Thanks Norm, the wait is painful, but at least I can stop refreshing the page every 5 minutes 🙂
