3D-Printing in Multiple Colors with the Palette 2

We check out the Mosaic Palette 2, an accessory that allows 3D printers to print in multiple colors and materials by splicing different printer filament and feeding a new strand into your printer. Mosaic’s Mitch Debora explains what’s new in the Palette 2 and shows us their splicer software that lets you colorize your models for printing.

  1. Promising and very tempting. The original palette was just too expensive to try. The only concerning part is this: Canvas is free right now but over time we will introduce a pricing scheme….” As it is cloud based you may find your self with extra cost eventually outside your control. This needs careful scrutiny. Don’t like cloud for this type of application no reason at all that would benefit the customer.

  2. I agree. If there were a free version of Canvas guaranteed for the foreseeable future with paid versions that have additional features to warrant it, I would be more likely to get some version of the Palette. The machine seems like such a good deal, I worry that the entry level prices are just bait to make people eventually pay for the software subscriptions.

  3. yup, the moment he said ‘cloud’ i went from ‘that is the most elegant solution to the problem i have ever seen…’ to ‘…and now they smothered it with needless complexity and dependency.’

  4. Mosaic support confirmed to me that they ‘expect’ that their standalone Chroma App should support Palette 2 at shipping. That would allow specific slicing from Simplify 3D etc. without Canvas. So that maybe a save path. Canvas will store models on their server, they will be private and you can delete them anytime. No word whether you can download the edited models for save keeping.

But looking at the Onshape pricing disaster I don’t want to depend on another ‘free’ online service that will start pilfering or changing Eula on you like excluding CC or GPL licensing of models. No problem paying for good software but give me an app that handles my files on my PC.
