Adam Savage’s New Tiny Parts Sorter and Storage!

Adam checks out a new set of boxes for sorting and storing tiny screw and other parts for his modelmaking builds. His solution of gluing small jewelry boxes to foamcore is similar to the sorting boxes used by professional watch repairers like these sent by a viewer. Also sent are some incredibly tiny screws and watch parts that Adam checks out with his recently upgraded microscope!

  1. I goofed somehow and none of my comments showed up. The studs for the wheel hub are 0.8mm UNM hex bolts from Scale Hardware. They make real brass and stainless hex head nuts and bolts in UNM sizes.

  2. Another type of flexible containers for small parts are SMD component boxes that can be clipped together. They are used for electronic surface mount components which can be really tiny.

They come in different sizes, each one has an individual lid.

I don’t know who first started building these, I found them here ( https://www.licefa.de/produkte/leitfaehige-verpackungen-kategorie/smd-boxen/, https://www.licefa.de/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/LIC_KAT20_Kapitel8.pdf ) but chinese ones also exist.

  3. It tickles me at how much Adam enjoyed those. Glad I was able to send him some more ephemera from another oddball occupation to add to his collection!

I wish I had thought to measure the thickness of the gear I sent to add another sense of scale, I’ll have to come back and update with that when I have the opportunity to fuss with one of them again.

  4. that was fascinating! on one hand, yeah. once you see that gear, it’s kinda obvious that this is how it’s done. but also: never would i ever have thought of this! always a joy to get that kind of glimpse into something you hadn’t considered before, and adam’s enthusiasm is infectious as always.

small note for the sake of translation: GmbH is a german-language analogue to the US’ LLC. the english wikipedia has a surprisingly informative overview.

  5. My best friend was a Master Watchmaker and he told me a story about the rivalry between the Germans and Swiss Watchmakers, seems the Germans made this incredibly tiny drill bit, the smallest they had ever made. They sent one to the Swiss as an example of what they could do, The Swiss returned the drill bit with no note or anything. The Germans thought they has finally done something the Swiss could not match, until someone looked closely at the drill bit and noticed something that had not been there before, a hole, drilled THRU the drill bit
