Adam Savage’s Favorite Tools: Ratchet and Socket Set!

Adam gripes about something everyone who’s worked with sockets can relate to: having an incomplete set because the cases they’re stored in aren’t any good. That’s why he’s a fan of Milwaukee’s ratchet and socket sets, which are stored in a robust and thoughtfully designed carrying case. What are tools you own that have great storage cases? (1/4 set, 3/8in set)

  1. What ink does he use to label those drawers? I saw the same on the air tool organizer but wasn’t mentioned.

  2. Great video! Sockets are something I seldom use, but when I do – just as stated, they are missing! Years ago, Adam had mentioned in the podcast that he was kicking around ideas for a better way to store/sell sockets and I am curious if that project has fallen by the wayside.

  3. White out pen. He mentions it in passing in several older videos. Also, here on twitter – /donttrythis/status/1164660906632122369

  4. Ideally mfrs would offer a ‘deluxe case’ option for their tools – which would make sense because it’s something you only want to pay for once, and when you buy a replacement for the broken tool you don’t need another case. If a tool is popular enough, a third party could even take a swing at filling the need – laptop and camera cases are a thing, why not tool cases?

I wonder if Adam has ever considered using sortino-sized boxes (like he uses for storing nuts/bolts/screws/other small parts) for tool storage?

  5. My solution was to buy Wera. Not only do they come in a nice laser-cut case, but they’re so expensive that there’s no way in hell I’m ever going to let one of them out of my sight long enough to get lost.

  6. My Uncle gave me my first socket set made by Draper for my 18th birthday. It was special to me and so It is nearly complete20+ years later. But yes I have lost a couple of items. The socket set in question came in a blow moulded case which is easy to remove or replace sockets from see they do exist. The only issue was the hinge which is just a single flexible bit of plastic which with fatigue has eventually torn all the way along. I still use the case so I can make sure all parts are present but it is such a pain having no hinged lid. I suppose I shall have to make a case one day. 🙂
