I just finished my DeAgostini Falcon. Really excited to hear the conversation about it. It had been my internal monologue for months and months as I build and readied for paint. Do I want to replicate the filming miniature, or do I go for more realism? Most of the dirt streaks are just blasts from an airbrush with maybe a straight-edged card on one side to give one side of the streak a crisp edge.
I ultimately went for the more refined approach. Lots of oil paints and pastels. I put a ton of time into it. It’s not quite as garishly dirty as the prop is, because I’m not building it for camera where those effects need to be grossly exaggerated to show up under bright light.
I ended up with a bunch of upgrades and “special modifications I made myself” – like running additional landing lights, fiber optics in the cockpit, upgrading the rear engine lights so they flicker and are more blue, and some interior parts.
I didn’t build it in issue order at times. I found some of instruction order to be inefficient or would leave me with a lot of sub-assemblies hanging around for a while. Spent a lot of time trying to plan a build order as I went through.
It was a great build. It’s available now in one complete order on DeAgostini’s website for $999. The Bandai Perfect Grade may have a little sharper detail, but the scale of the DeAgo at roughly 1/43 – 1:1 replica of the shooting miniature, it’s hard to beat, especially at that price point.

Funny enough Norm, we briefly met a few minutes after I saw the DeAgo Falcon at Celebration in Anaheim and see the model in person finally put me over the edge to buy it.
I COMPLETELY don’t get Wes Anderson movies. I don’t find them funny, they’re simply uninteresting to me, the weirdness of them is a shtick, and I find the characters annoying. But that’s just me.

While I don’t have the Deag. I am planning on getting the 1/72 Bandai (which I was hoping would be a build with Norm…=D ) but people argue till they’re blue in the face about the painting on the falcon…and I really just enjoy watching the process.
I’m still on the fence about the Deag. I really love the scale of both the Bandai and the Deag. But the price is putting me off a little bit, especially as Bandai is hinting at an ESB…For the same price I could get two small falcons and have two incredibly long builds hah.
Did you watch the painting videos they put out? I personally am still wading through all the paint debates on the falcon. To my eyes, I feel like their example model came out a *bit* too dark.
Do you have display plans for the 3ft falcon? I would love to almost build furniture around it! hah.

Wes Anderson movies can be weird, I find them hit and miss, weird has to be exceptional for me to like it, took me years before I got to really appreciate the animation in Python for example. But I do think his new movie looks very interesting and I’m looking forward to it.
Would love a falcon, but just out of my price range, I may see about printing as large a model I can once I finally join the 3d printing revolution in a week or two.

I strive to never leave a comment that I wouldn’t say in person to the intended subject. I suggest you do the same. Or maybe you WOULD tell me to go fuck myself in person for saying on my podcast that people should call their representatives to express their opinion on the heath care bill. In that case, I truly hope I don’t meet you.
Well here’s my take. If you have the space for it and the extra money, go for the DeAgo. It’s really impressive. Having the things you can point to and basically say “this is the model from the film” is pretty neat.
In the US, it comes with a wall mount. It’s a standard VESA mount but it has some decent articulation. Unfortunately, the plate obscures a bit of the bottom hull. I haven’t hung mine up on the wall yet, but will be doing so soon. I’ve seen people convert IKEA coffeetables into display case tables. I’ve seen someone build a counter height table with a little LCD screen showing a slideshow of build photos and video. I’ve seen a few people put it on a snare drum stand – that seems to work great. Had I the know how, i might have fabricated a better mounting system that would be internal to the frame and loose the bottom gun turret port for a stand to go through. I’ve seen people do that and put it on adjustable arm to really get the pose desired. It’s much like the actual filming model. The filming model also mounted through the mandible and had set screws to lock it in place. That was used for specific shots.
The Bandai Perfect Grade looks fantastic. I would have gotten it if I didn’t just do the DeAgo falcon and if it came out before the DeAgo. I don’t need two Falcons. I’m Falcon’ed out right now 🙂 I’m onto Gundam models for a bit before coming back to the stack of Star Wars Bandai kits i have waiting for me.
I did watch their painting videos. If you’re going for the filming minature look, they’re a decent reference. Maybe a little TOO heavy handed in the videos and what they printed as the painted replicas in the magazines, but the techniques look accurate to get the filming look. But, they absolutely look like someone airbrushed it. The dirt streaks are straight up paint splatter. After studying reference, that’s all I can see now. Great on camera, but in person – it’s truly a film prop. Fast and dirty and made for screen. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve seen it in person and it’s absolutely beautiful. I painted mine using traditional scale modeling techniques with pastels and oil paints.The main hull and panels were airbrushed though because they are just regular base coats. I didn’t airbrush the weathering.
Something I use for my bead foam builds to give it strength and wear resistance. Foam Armour from Deluxe Materials. Once it dries, takes about 2hrs, it becomes stretch resistant and water resistant very handy for RC model foam aeroplane underbellies and wings.

Glad to see the DeAgostini Falcon is making a return. Its the reason I bought a premium membership back in the summer of 2015 and have been ever since. I’m in a real Dilemma as to whether to buy the completed model direct from DeAgostini or whether I should get a LEGO UCS Falcon. I don’t think I can afford/would be allowed both.

Thought I’d save this episode for when I was finishing up the de-ago falcon. Doing Issue 100 now (no joke)…. That tip about the sprue’s would have been so helpful. There are so many greeblies in issue 100 and so fiddly. My fingertips are bleeding.
