Don’t hate on me y’all, but I always use PowerPoint/Keynote to organize my projects. As a college professor I have to do the conventional PP slide thing, which is fine for lecture, but the format lends itself to any task that requires lots of visual and text material organized together, especially in a narrative structure. Even when I am not going to display the slides, I use it essentially as a stack of really big 3X5 cards, each slide with notes, a quote, a picture, etc. I imagine it would work well for storyboarding. I now organize the research for all my maker projects in PowerPoint. My current projects on Hap Hazard’s Lunar Exploration Suit and Alvim-Correa’s War of the Worlds Martian fighting-machines each have several hundred images and details, and the rudimentary drawing tools in PowerPoint make it east to annotate the images with callouts. Of course you also have a huge notes field to handle lots of text when you need to.

“Keep your politics out of x” is impossible fantasy for those who are trying to escape reality. The sooner you come to terms with that, the better.

i can totally see the mix of powerpoint’s tools being useful for free-form, mixed-media documenting, but, genuine question: isn’t it a problem for you that your data is locked away in a proprietary format (lesser practical problem) and that it’s practically unsearchable (the, for me, bigger practical problem)?
(though i am probably the diametrically opposed use case from you: i use plain text formats wherever i can so it’s processable by all the unix tools, and when academia demands slides, i convert whatever markup i used into latex and make slides from that)

PowerPoint has the same search tools as the rest of the Office suite, but it’s that same limited Find box. Honestly, I’ve never needed it but I can see if you are doing something text-heavy like qualitative data analysis or a writing project that might be a frustration. While I think we share an ideological slant against proprietary boxes like the Office Universe, am also a pragmatist and willing to compromise if the convenience is worth it. Anyway, PowerPoint isn’t really all that isolating and it isn’t a great chore moving stuff in and out, and for dissemination you can always sent the stack out as a pdf. In my actual workflow PowerPoint is where stuff ends up as a kind of organized research repository that reflects my current thinking, but I still have files of photos in both original and heavily processed formats, and tend to put all the text for a project into a single growing document, cutting and pasting into the PowerPoint repository as needed. While many I’m sure would like to be able to link the PowerPoint notes fields to the big project text document for one-stop editing, I just get confused. The copy and paste step gives me a pause for some metathinking about what I’m doing.
If there is anything we need today it’s something to bring people together who otherwise have different social/political positions. If you’d rather preserve the community by skiping an episode to avoid getting triggered I support that.

my main search use when i’m really glad for unix and plain text files: oh damn, i know i had a couple of tangential notes on something that would be useful here, but what project was that for again? and then i can just search an entire folder of files for keywords from the command line until i find it.
