Offworld: Asteroid Exploration and Mining
Asteroids have been the subject of numerous science fiction stories, in both destructive and constructive depictions. Joining Ariel to set the record straight on asteroids are Michael Busch of SETI and planetary astronomer Sondy Springmann. They discuss the form and composition of asteroids, the state of asteroid mining, and why there are so many misconceptions about asteroids in pop culture.
Hi guys,
I enjoyed the discussion in the video, it was very illuminating about the make up of known asteroids and how thinking about mining them is counter to our deep gravity well thinking.
Michael mentioned that he knew some books that did asteroid mining better, did anyone find out which ones?
Several come to mind that used a kind of netting with a changing polarity(negative and positive charge) so I could imagine the “drill head” being earthed to its worksurface and the removed ore drifting to the net.
