Norm looks positively disgusted during that ad read at the top.
I’m with Norm. I saw Arnold’s “Total Recall” – I don’t want my head to explode on Mars. I’ll do more stuff on Earth before they iron out the bugs.
(Another great episode, gentlemen.)
I’m going to do a new thing, comment serially as the podcast goes and post at the end.
In high school choir I was one of three guys that was absolutely stoked to sing in the musicals and stuff. Probably because all of my friends were in the art program. The jocks still ruled (and I graduated in 2011) because its in the middle of nowhere and FOOTBALL.
Cow eyeball… ANY butcher shop.
The controller, I’m worried about it. I want something that’s better than an analog stick but I’m worried. Anything like that tends to feel “floppy”. A nice thing to try on a mouse and keyboard is to use esdf instead of wasd for movement and it gives you a lot more real estate for use, crouch, sprint, and things like that.
Statistical doomsday sounds like bullshit. If you apply that thought in the ACTUAL last 5% of human existence it seems like you’d have longer than at any other time.
On being a century jumper, what are the chances that you bring a disease along that is deadly then because the immunity has died out. (I admit I have no idea about immunology)
Thanks for reminding me that my smoke detector has been off for months because of boiling water.
Norm at least looks like he doesn’t like the ads.
And I’m done. Thanks for doing this site. I found it a week or two ago and I really enjoy the kind of thinking that goes on.
I listen to a handful of podcasts, out of which TIOAT is the only one that doesn’t (or hasn’t at one point) had ads, and in most of those the hosts read them out to avoid breaking up the flow.
Being a former sales person in “pro audio”, there are more people than you’d think that want to mix multiple sources for home audio. You can get Behringer mixers for $50 or less that will do fine, even if you are using a 5.1 PC speaker system. Using the three 1/8th inch cable setup, the green one will be your front left and right channels that you can send to the mixer and the rest you can hook up as usual. This will give you 5.1 from your PC and stereo from as many sources as your mixer will allow.
I too hate wrong tech terms in movies, I still cringe when I hear 1.21 “Jigawatts” in the same way I do when I hear “JIF”!
BeOS, damn that brings me back.
This way of you doing the ad live at the beginning of the podcast, , is much better than listening to canned audio, IMHO..
😉
I am A-okay with reading ads. The Bomb guys just started doing this too and I actually listen to the ad version because they’ll continue talking about them/poke fun at them. I could get it with them edited out since I”m premium, but then I’d feel like I’m missing out.
I’m okay with it too. Its fairly unobtrusive. Isn’t this the same company being advertised on GB too?
In regards to ad’s, no audio ads, no way… Put the ad on the video feed (which I can block) or give us a subscription option. If you must have audio ad’s could there be some sort of queue (music or other) so I can train myself to tune out and/or mute it at that point.
Also how many times do we have to talk about Apple? Everyone is doing it, there is enough social commentary on Apple as it is, maybe take some of their advice and “think different”. They are boring, get over it…
The way you do it is much better. Marc Maron does his own and I’m usually Laughing through them. Caned audio would be BAD.
I must admit, I laughed through your ad because of Norm’s expression.
eggzecutable… I thought Ryan Davis set you straight.
Don’t mind ads at all, especially if you have fun with them.
Jeremy’s a good #3.
Introduce an ad-free, paid subscription if you’re keeping the audio ad.
I am perfectly fine with ads. Ads keep things like radio and podcasts free to the listener.
As always enjoyed the podcast guys.
NOT A FAN OF AUDIOBOOKS?!?!?!? Man, I couldn’t deal with my commute without them.
I check them out for free from our library system all the time.
I didn’t mind the ad at the beginning. How much license do you have with what you can say? Some podcasts I listen to get really creative with how they say the sponsor’s ad.
I think it’s funny that:
A) you guys start doing ads around the same time that Giant Bomb caved into them, and
B) it’s the same ad for the same website as them.
As a premium GB member, I actually like the ads, and will continue to do so so long as those guys keep having fun during the reads (using Wii shop music also helps). At the very least, I don’t mind them. I’d imagine that I’ll feel the same way about Tested.
If you listen to a lot of tech/gaming podcasts Squarespace seem to sponsor a lot of them.
I hope this isn’t too forward of me to ask, but do you guys get paid per download for a podcast with an ad in it? Glad you finally hopped on board, your podcast is great you deserve to monetize it.
Also, Jeremy is a great 3rd chair, a close second after Gary.
Hi – this is a small neat 4 way audio mixer that would not take up a lot of space :
http://www.thomann.de/ie/behringer_micromix_mx400.htm
It’s probably available in America with a different power supply.
Murder-Death-KILL!
Another one knocked out of the park guys. Is there a schedule to the third guest or is it fly by the seat of your pants?
Thanks guys! I’m the dude who asked the question about the audio mixers. Both of you suggested Behringer and they look like they have a couple of different models that would fit the bill. Having the option to preserve 5.1 would be nice, but it’s not key.
Jeremy suggested a second pair of speakers; that used to be my solution, but my desk is crowded enough as it is. Also, having two sets of speakers is no good if I’m using the setup at night when the kids are asleep and I need to use headphones.
I agree, it’s kind of a weird “problem” to have, but I was curious to see what they had to say and if any other solutions I hadn’t thought of might pop up.
Thanks! And if anybody else has any ideas, I’d love to hear them.
Pre-roll ads are the new fake outtakes.
In regards to Liam’s mixer question I’ve been doing exactly what he described by piping the audio through my Astro Mixamp I got with my A40s. I think the amp alone is a little pricey but it’s small and unobtrusive enough that it may be preferable to a larger mixer.
I don’t know someone would object to 15sec. spot in a 2hr. long podcast.
As long as is doesn’t affect your independence and objectivity.
I was hoping the exact model of the powered usb hub mentioned near the end of the podcast could be posted, so I could get one. It feels impossible to know which hubs will reliably charge with wall power and no computer connection. Thanks, love the podcast very much.
just to say Jeremy is a excellent third chair.
For the guy who wanted to listen to his tablet at the same time as his game audio: I’m not sure why a mixer is needed. I have done this in the past by simply running an audio patch cord from my tablet into the line-in of my sound card on the desktop. You can then just unmute the line-in audio in the windows sound mixer / volume control and you’re done. I’m not sure exactly how it would be done on a Mac but I assume it would be pretty much the same.
