  1. d’ya think?
sounds like everything apart from ‘thats how dumb kids hold their phones when shooting video’ got shot to bits.

    -)

  2. RE: YouTube – I hate that you can’t see full screen portrait on the Android app. Every once in a while I see a vertical video, flip it to portrait mode, and the image shrinks down to the small player showing all the text below. Argh!

  3. Periscope has some interesting applications. Sure there is a buttload of garbage, but I also sat in my living room in Toronto and watched the sun come up in Tokyo as it was happening, then flipped over and went on a stroll through Times Square.

There’s something about the immediacy of it that’s compelling. But of course it will mostly get used by dudebros to showcase their freestyle rapping or something.

Some form of more robust curation or filtering could turn it into something compelling.

edit: I say “compelling” too much. I was raised by feral NPR hosts.

  4. Hey, so I’ve been working in QA for a big publisher for the last 7 and a half years. Feel free to ask me anything.

As far as the GTA bug goes… Yikes… That’s a bad one to miss. There’s a couple of factors I can see that could explain it.

1-As much as we want it, we can’t realy check everything.

2-Considering this bug specifically, remember that QA departements will most likely use a corporate network setup which means the chances for a user to have special characters in their username is low. We do try to have special machines setup to replicate a “home setup” but, again, we can’t really test everyting. There’s also some serious security concerns when using a machine connected directly to the external world so it’s often frowned upon by IT.

Basically you learn from your mistakes… Everytime you release a game that has one of those weird bug you take note of it and add it to your list of test cases for all future projects. We also check what happens in the industry (aka I’ll be telling my team to check that username thing tomorrow lol).

To give you an example, we tested Batman: Arkham Asylum back in the days. We found out on the forums post-release that if your “My Documents” folder was on a different drive than the C: the game would crash. It’s kind of a freak bug but we never thought of testing that pre-release. Now it’s part of our normal list of tests we do with every new games.

Learn and move on I guess. In the end, we’re still humans with budget and time limits.

  5. Is it just me, or is there a noticeable drop in audio quality this week? It sounds more echoey than normal.

Oh well, no biggie, won’t stop me from listening to the rest!

  6. Re vertical video – Hang w/ is another app that does live streaming in vertical format. I only got it because Alan Tudyk is using it to promote his ‘Con Man’ series. I get a notification ‘Alan Tudyk wants to hang with you’ and when I log in he’s started his monologue. Mostly he frames the shot so his head takes up the whole screen. He’s still getting the hang of it, I think, because he spends a lot of time saying how many people are watching and hi to the people who send him messages during the ‘broadcast’. I also think it’s a fairly new app, because it had trouble when a thousand people tried to watch all at the same time. You can watch previous broadcasts which is not very different to watching it live, in my opinion.

  7. I was researching the USB 3.1 spec and it seems that to get more than 60W through a type-C cable, you need an electronically marked active cable. I guess this is for devices to check if the cable can handle the higher current. Haven’t heard about this anywhere else. Does anyone have any more details?

  8. One small nit pick about the CG faces part. The entire scene in The Matrix with all of the Smiths was CGI, not just the faces. The faces were not done extremely well in it, but the rest of the scene was pretty good.

Also, I agree about DareDevil, it is excellent. My wife and I went into it cold, and she didn’t even want to watch it. We are both hooked though, and hopefully we can finish it this weekend.

  9. Okay, I went ahead and just saw Furious 7 in a still packed theater. I was pretty low but loved the view, might have discovered a new favorite row! Kinda like a drive-in.

Anyway… I have turned off FF6 two times, just couldn’t get into it and never finished it. You really don’t need to know what’s happened in that one, if you have some ability to link things together you’ll know what’s gonna happen after minute 3. And BOY was this movie freaking awesome! I’m not the biggest action movie fan but it’s just a very pleasant string of events without pause, the lamest oneliners and nonsensical moves ever to be put on screen and they know it. The fact that they acknowledge the ridiculousness of their awesomeness makes it so good. Whenever that massive Dwayne Johnson says something cheesy and predictable… I’m in. I had heard the Wiz Khalifa song on the radio a couple times and didn’t think much of it but to now hear it I’m context, it almost teared me up a little. For what it’s worth, I haven’t seen CGI Paul ever, I might not just be enough of a fan to do so.

One reason I went to the movies is cause I bought GTA V. 65GB holy crap. Got pretty shitty internet here, the download’s doing around 1.2MB/s, in other words I can go to bed now, sleep in, have a good breakfast and hope it’s done by that time.

Also I checked out the BB8 rolling on stage. That freaked me out, so impressive.

, there’s 3 “Starbucks Attractions” in Seattle, they also have the one that makes the most sales on a daily basis. If I remember correctly it’s across the Apple Store.

  10. We do use outsourcers to do hardware compat tests but those guys would not test something like a weird windows username.

  11. The argument that video produced for phones *should* be portrait kinda falls apart when I simply turn my phone sideways. Portrait is definitely happening so, uh, whatever I guess, I have better things to curmudgeon over.

On face replacements in movies I’m surprised no one mentioned The Social Network, when the twins were in a shot together. It was pretty good.

  12. Wow. Norm lives under a rock or something. Every early review I saw about S6 Edge’s edges was positive, compared to both the regular S6 and the Note4 Edge, the total opposite of what he said. When pulling menus from the side, it even feels better than regular flatscreens, improving the Android experience. While I was using it at the store, it felt awesome and somehow the screen and images look really cool, not distracting. I always hated Samsung phones with all their bloatware and ugliness, but this one is on another level. Norm, do yourself a favor and review the Edge alongside the regular S6.

  13. Horizon is an iOS app that film in landscape mode regardless of the orientation of the phone, on top of that it use the orientation as a zoom and it provide great stabilisation.

Apple should have integrated this filming mode a long time ago

  14. I thought the best CG face was the first Captain America, I thought Chris Evans had just gotten real thin for the part. man this guys really into his part…LOL

  15.   just to piggyback off this – I’m also a QA tester for a big publisher. the thing my mind immediately went to is a sad reality that some companies like to give their testers naming conventions naming conventions to abide by, for obvious reasons, but can potentially obviously be a harmful thing in cases like this. first off, all of our work stations are just our names, nothing special, and set up by the IT department. for in-game stuff, however, if we make a character in a game, we use a couple qualifiers in the name, so that if its a multiplayer game or whatever you can be easily identified by your fellow testers, which can also mean some testers dont think to break those conventions.

sorry if that was worded poorly. deadline is coming up and i am tired.

  16. Hey man, I created an account in hopes you would see this. I normally visit the site often and watch the videos however I listen to EVERY podcast in my car on the way to work. It’s the highlight of my week for sure. But ever since I started listening, I have the same complaints and they haven’t gotten better. EVERYTHING about the podcast is amazing but I have some honest audio nitpicks. PLEASE don’t take offense, but I can’t be the the only one with this issue.

The nose whistle when you breath man. It’s getting to the point where I almost have to stop listening. I know that this most recent podcast you had a cold but this happens nearly all the time. I believe you have a deviated septum and you are probably used to it and it’s possible you can’t even hear it, but you ONLY breath through your nose, and each time it leaves a very high pitch whistle in the mic. It’s killing my ears man.

Maybe not everyone hears this? I dunno. I listen in my car and it’s a stock sound system, but it’s got ok highs, mids and a subwoofer but something’s gotta change. Either you gotta train yourself to be a mouth breather when you’re on mic or you need to see your doc about getting your deviated septum corrected. Or be aware that you’re doing it and breathe away from the mic? I don’t know but as the host of the show, this is sort of a big deal isn’t it?

It’s not only that though, but like for example today, listening to the cough drop roll around in your mouth, you sucking on it, and smacking your mouth each time you talk because it’s in your mouth.

You may not think of this but you are LITERALLY plugged directly into the ears of your listeners. Is there anything you can do about this?

Lastly, A minor nitpick but still a pet peeve, why is it that all of you guys can’t seem to remember to turn off your audible notifications when recording? Every time someone’s phone bloops I look to my phone thinking it’s me. Sure it doesn’t happen a ton but at least a couple times every other podcast.

Again man, I know this sounds like I’m being a total A-HOLE but I flippin love the podcast and want to keep listening. I just wish you guys could be a little more professional on the recording and micing.

  17. It does not seem to botter me at all, but i ear it.. everybody breath loudly in life, especially in a mic when you come to think about it.. In fact this is a condition called Misophonia you got, don’t blame others for that! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Misophonia I really don’t feel this way about the show and i like the casualness of it all.
