Episode 349 – Where is Jibo? – 5/5/16
Happy belated Star Wars day! This week, we talk about some new Star Wars-related announcements, Hulu live streaming, Maker Faire anticipation, science news, and our new favorite Oculus game. Plus, Kishore and Norm explain to Jeremy the plot of the Civil War comic book series, and share their hopes for the new film.
Depth of Field is the aspect of VR that I’ve been wondering about the longest. Much like 3D movies, I expect the lack of focal blurring is what contributes to the visual mismatch that causes dizziness. If they can fix that (measuring convergence against the virtual objects you’re looking at and creating a depth matte?) then that’s a huge step.
The look that Jeremy shoots to the camera when Norm talks about the new Marvel Secret Wars was a thing of beauty.
Addition to Tested drinking game – Norm says “LieMAX”.
Also – after trying to remember exactly what it was, “Shaper” is a terrible name for a HandHeld CNC Router. if only for the fact that there is already a “shaper” when it comes to woodworking. A shaper is a more-or-less generic term for super-powerful, under-table mounted motor that allows for very big bits that usually form moldings.
The “Shaper” that norm was talking about is at shapertools.com and is called the “Shaper Origin”.

Can’t post them here, the comment editor chokes on them.
I drove up to a Microsoft Store last weekend SPECIFICALLY because they had a Vive demo station. Their demo lasted about 10 mins and included The Blue, Tiltbrush, and Space Pirate Trainer. I had to wait about an hour, but thankfully they let you sign in (had to sign a waiver) and then wander off for a while, didn’t have to stand there waiting.
That was my first experience with any VR system. I was already pretty sure I wanted one, but now I’m definitely sure. I’ll probably wait until later this year to pick it up, though, when supply is a little more stable.
Here’s a talk that goes into some depth about Carbon’s printing technology:

Pretty sure Chris Evans has rescinded his “getting out of the contract” thing lately…
I’d say I’m a pretty huge Star Wars fan and I’ve never heard of Hamilton.
