  1. Hihi. So many people not getting the tittle on youtube.

Anyway. Instead of ice cubes, don’t a lot of “purists” use chilled stones now?
That way you don’t water out your drink.

  2. I have about three sets of the chilled stones. I find them great because I’ve never liked watered down drinks.

  3. kim: wow, that looks fancy! does it bring any advantages over putting something like chilled stones or ball bearings directly into the drinks?

podcast: i’m with kishore re hamilton. but i guess that’s not surprising, since i am the opposite of their ideal target demographic. i’m not american, and lacking that direct relation, the plot kinda disintegrates into just another recent history politician. i’m also not that much into musicals. and finally, i intensely dislike hip hop. but, y’know, to each their own. 🙂

  4. I did the whiskey stone thing for a while, but it keeps the liquid cool-not-cold, and I was paranoid about these soapstone rocks flying towards my top teeth…

  5. Regarding Hamilton: I love the broadway cast recording. I also love the mixtape. The idea of the mixtape was the original genesis of Hamilton. It’s also a tribute to the history of hip hop. Mixtapes are a big part of hip hop culture, and I think it’s a great tribute to that. Lin Manuel Miranda has said countless times when writing the show he heard certain rappers in his head, spitting lyrics. It’s awesome to hear the people he was thinking about do his songs and insert their own spin onto them.

  6. BC may have prime numbers involved in the private key, public key signing part, but the fundamental process of BC mining is basically just grinding through hashes looking for collisions, which is not actually as complicated as 99% of BC articles make it out to be. Look up ‘hashcash faq’ for a nice explanation down the page.

To me it seems like a big deal when trusted tech sites like Tested do not accept BC or even want to own it, since like most currencies BC is be valuable only because a lot of people think it’s valuable. The ‘it will never happen’ things seem to be starting to happen, like the big chain fork discussed on NPR a while back.

  7. Also it was nice to hear about Carrie Fisher. I guess I didn’t realize what a big deal she was until I was still feeling it a week later. Before Ripley, Trinity, Leeloo, Resident Evil, Aeon Flux, Underworld, Rogue, Mystique, Black Widow, Dr. Shaw, Murph, … what other roles besides hers? That 3/4″ doll probably changed the way a generation thought. And her giving the finger to that same industry’s flaws, probably did too but in ways we will never know.

  8. Coke and most soda is ideally meant to be poured over ice. Fountain drinks taste better because the carbonation fiz releases some of the acid into the gas changing the ph of the drink. Cold can vs hot really only drives how much water you add to the dilution.

Would love to see some tested science to profile this against a ‘taste’ test.

  9. The advantage is not having stuff in your drink, be it diluting ice or stones that come sailing towards your pearly whites 🙂 Disadvantage is that while it works just fine, you won’t get the liquid as cold as you would using ice.

Then again… cool, not cold, is what a lot of people are going for with their whisky.

Also, to maximise transfer from base to drink, the bottom of the glass is a lot thinner than most glassware used for whisky. The lighter glass feels a bit odd if you’re used to a heavy rocks glass. :p

  10. Warm soda over ice is the worst. I’d rather just drink it warm. Soda fountains chill the soda before it ever hits the ice, that’s how it’s meant to be served. Cold rocks will never beat ice because ice does a tremendous amount of work through phase change.

Also, I’m playing the crap out of Super Mario Run. Add me: 7854-6823-9952

  11. Sherlock season 4 started strangely. I am really a fan despite usually not liking that term.

The first two seasons had me wetting my pants as Moriarty is probably the scariest villain ever in my book.

This one fell flat as it had a bit of a jumping the shark vibe. Will keep watching with my wife though… Can’t cut an old friend loose just as Norm said.

  12. I am so incredibly jealous of Norm’s internet. Best deal I can get here is 10 down/2 up for $60 a month.

  13. i see, thanks for the clarification. 🙂 i guess i was thinking too much of very gentle sips to imagine sliding stones/steelware as an uneasiness factor.

as with hamilton, not much of a surprise i’m somewhat off the mark: i drink mostly tea. 😉

  14. Joshua Tree is amazing. I’m baffled that native Californian (right?) Norm doesn’t seem to know anything about it. But the U2 album cover was actually shot near Death Valley, though – not in Joshua Tree.

The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway is cool, but it sounded like Norm was thinking of like a roller coaster train or something. It’s a cable car that goes up the mountain. And yeah, it’s round, with windows all around, and the floor rotates so everybody gets all the views during the ride. It’s not particularly motion sickness-inducing. (And there are trees up top with bark that smells like butterscotch, which was awesome.)

Also, like Star Wars, Marvel is owned by Disney, so it shouldn’t be any surprise that they were showing a Marvel movie on the Disney cruise if they were also showing _Rogue One_.

  15. & ,

I agree, Joshua Tree is great. Also agree about the Aerial Tramway. Definitely shouldn’t cause motion sickness. My wife is prone to it, but didn’t have any issues going up or down. I’d also like to recommend the Living Desert Zoo. They really do a great job there, and the staff are really friendly etc. They also do special shows at night etc too.
