Gotta say I very nearly stopped listening the first time I heard ‘retina display’.
The thing is with the Android system is that those who don’t want to fiddle around with rooting, homebrew and updates don’t have to. What makes it mass market is that it does what iOS does but on cheaper handsets/call plans and on a variety of networks. As long as iPhone keeps its high price and restricts itself by network it will never be mainstream and will remain a niche product.
Why would anyone want to carry a 160 Gb iPod Classic? Well here are my reasons. I started with the 4 Gb mini and quickly ran out of room for my music. It was frustrating trying to figure out what I wanted to load and what I wanted to leave behind. So I upgraded to the Classic. I don’t have to think about what to put in there…I just synch it all….music, movies, audiobooks, podcasts, etc… You can also use the Classic as a USB drive, so I can store other documents and programs on there to transfer between computers. With everything I have in iTunes loaded in there, now I have a backup of my iTunes should my PC die. An added bonus….the iPod Classic isn’t always in the same place as the PC so if the house burns down while I’m out, I haven’t lost my whole iTunes collection. If I go on vacation, I load it up with movies and bring along the video cable to watch on a TV. I’m never having to worry about the room. Now click wheel vs. touch screen – I use my iPod Classic religiously in my car and it’s much easier to keep my eyes on the road and use the click wheel to jump to the next song, pause or skip ahead. So I think the Classic does have a place, even if it’s a niche market group.

Amazon UK emails me all the time (well a couple of times a week I would say) with stuff that is clearly targeted based off my past purchases. A lot of them are scatter gun e.g. Here are the latest Sci-Fi books for pre-order – but some of them are spot on what you were asking for e.g. You buy Ian M Banks, did you know the latest Culture book is out soon?
Ugh I’m not a fan of the new nano, for a lot of people the nano is the only “iPod” for them as they don’t want to pony up for the touch and the shuffle is kinda a joke for anyone that isn’t going to use it for working out.
Now the new nano pretty much is just a glorified shuffle which in my opinion will cut out a huge amount of people. Truth be told though even if this is what is going to happen people will lap it up anyway as Apple can do no wrong. 😐
After owning various ipods over the years (ipod 5G, ipod classic 2007, ipod touch 2nd Gen, ipod touch 3rd gen, iphone (original),
iphone 3g and ipod classic 2009) I can say the ipod Classic is still the only modern iPod that works correctly. There I said it!
It’s the only iPod that can still play and live update smart playlists regardless of the configuration without having to sync to iTunes. Be it nested, a thousands rules, or based on other static or smart playlists, it just works. Apple has broken this functionality along time ago with iOS platform and continues to ignore the problem. There are numerous threads on the subject if you wanna check their discussions. The Nano is a joke in my opinion considering their price points…$149 to $179 for 8 or 16GB. An additional $70-$100 will net you ten or twenty times the storage capacity and functionality.

just out of curiosity have you tried Goodreads? it lets you follow your favorite authors and will let you know by e-mail when they release something new (it piggybacks on Amazon’s stock). With all the digital bookstores you can keep a combined digital library at Goodreads. It also has a nifty (yes, nifty) widget creator of your ‘read’ books. You can display a digital bookshelf on your personal blog. There are other features like to-read and currently reading list, there is also a buy or share feature for IRL books.
I was bummed out after the discussion about ditching cable because the points against it were things like not being able to watch The Today Show due to lack of streams and anything live. Less than two weeks ago this very site ran a story about using HDTV antennas. You can still watch your morning news and new episodes of 30 Rock on Thursday nights, all in HD that’s probably better quality than what Comcast offers. It still amazes that people are so reliant on cable and satellite that they so often forget that probably more than half of what they watch comes over the air for free.
Gary I just saw The Book of Eli. It was great! Crazy to see your name right there in the credits as the writer. Going to buy the movie now.
