Podcast - This Is Only a Test

Episode 29 – Four People! FOUR! – 9/22/2010

Will, Norm, Ana, and Gary make the ultimate podcast super team in today’s celebration of a super-slow news week. This week, we talk about Minecraft, Civilization 5, Kindle stuff, the HDCP crack, Canadian Netflix, Sony Move, and GPUs. We talk about GPUs kind of a lot. Frankly, probably too much. Bye.

  1. OH MY GOD you guys are so bad at explaining Minecraft lol.  Ok, Gary, this is what it is.  The game randomly generates a world for you, and the whole world is built out of blocks.  In the day time you can explore the world, collect materials, and build a shelter, and then at night the baddies come out so it’s best to hide in your shelter.  You have to use imagination and just enjoy the sandbox world.  So for example, I built a log house on the side of a mountain, and at night I’ve been tunneling into the mountain, and soon I’ll be putting torches throughout there, and decorating it so it looks more comfortable.  You slowly build up your home; because it’s like legos you can really do anything.  You can craft all kinds of things like weapons or armor, or glass to make windows, or you can make a boat, and you can even create a farm.  It’s super casual and fun.

  2. Ahhh Americans’ and their complete ignorance of any country except their own. So precious. I would love some of these ‘free prescription drugs’ they’re talking about and cold weather.

  3. As someone from Nebraska, I see a decent number of Vibrams out and about, especially among runners. At least in the city, I don’t think people would be that freaked out. No promises if you went to a rural area, but why the hell would you want to do THAT?

  4. for those of you still struggling with the GPU concept, my expert-quality visual imaging system will answer any lingering questions:

  5.  Maybe they don’t eat actual beaver tails in Vancouver, but I wouldn’t put it past some people here in Saskatchewan.

They eat some pretty disgusting sounding things that are actually awesome.

  6. ” for those of you still struggling with the GPU concept, my expert-quality visual imaging system will answer any lingering questions:

    I see…. but what if I add a circle to that equation….

  7. So sick of arguments like Kindle vs iPad. No shit the iPad DOES more, because it costs like 3 times as much. So yeah, for the price and purpose, the two are equal, but they are hardly competing.

Also, here is my explanation for the GPU vs CPU thing.

Used to be, most of the processors could only comprehend shapes, drawings, and could only put out the same. These are the GPU’s But there were a few select more powerful chaps that could understand and use a more complex  language. But with so few of them, they were not terribly efficient. But then the Elite CPU’s realized that by giving the GPU’s a basic grasp on their own language, in return the GPU’s would work for them to improve the time it took to perform the tasks normally assigned to the CPU’s, when not giving shape to the world.

  8. Like ive been saying, Move is something thatll probaly get good later on. Its a slow burn, as it is with most things like this. Its already selling decent, so hopefully it continues to do so so we can continue to see it improve.
