OK, and as for computer consciousness, I happen to believe that human consciousness is not something that can be completely explained with the laws of physical science, which I suppose was one of Norm’s points. Not only that, it’s very difficult to actually define what it is. A six month old baby doesn’t seem conscious, but a one year old does. Human beings are funny.
Nokia is developing Meego right now together with IBM for high-end phones and tablets. A Meego tablet has been shown of several times and N9-01 running Meego codename Lankku is expected to be announced on friday. And the majorit of the R&D; money has gone into Meego. If Nokia does make a WP7 phone it wont be their major focuse. Most ppl expext that to be Nokias NA phone OS but will be focusing on Meego for the future since the pre-releases of the OS is very well liked and you can port Android apps to Meego with 0% effort, no really, all you need is to change the file formate.

Well, whatever Nokia are doing, they’re probably not making an Android phone. A shame in one way, but at least it will give WP7 a boost (hopefully).
to answer the question about what was the last successful handset from Nokia, the N95 (and the variant, the N95 8GB) and the E71/E72 were probably the last wildly successful phones.

Its amazing that I was just pondering consciousness earlier this week, and specifically if the act of sleeping would mimic a sensation of death.
, yes, you do dream during sleep, but only during REM sleep which makes up only a fraction of the entire sleep cycle. The majority of an 8 hour sleep is a dreamless, unconscious state of existence, in which you are senseless, and there is no recollection of the passed period of time.
I would consider death to be along the same lines of what we experience during sleep, but rather then death being a state of temporary unconsciousness, its really permanent Non-consciousness. (At least permanent at this point in our technological understanding).
Yes I’ve read it but do you seriously think that even a huge company like Nokia will scrap a OS that they have spent probably close to a billion dollars on developing? And they wont outright abandon Symbian cause that would be downright stupid. They sell hundreds of million Symbian phones every year and just throwing that away to focus on one OS and worse of all, the most barebone, closed off OS on the market then Nokia as a company is done. Going just with WP7 is going agains everything Nokia stands for. I can absolutely see Nokia making a WP7 phone but it will not be the main platform for their smartphones from here on.
I’ve had my Omnia 7 for 3 months now and its downright the worst Smartphone OS I’ve ever seen. It has alot of potential but it will take alot to make it a real competator in the smartphone market(even BADA is better then WP7). Android would be the smartest choice since they can stand out there with their great hardware(you may disagre but since you haven’t used a Nokia phone for some time you have no real platform to stand on with your opinions) but they have MeeGo and its extremely similar to Android except of what I’ve seen, a much better UI(granted only seen video but the user experience looks really good). And I, unlike you, have followed the development of MeeGo and even though its going slow(just like Elop said) its really promising and could really challenge Android in the smartphone market if its well marketed.
Also Nokia has said a long time ago that the N8 will be the last Nokia flagship model with Symbian and that all their High-End smartphones will be going with MeeGo from here on(if its still true we’ll see tomorrow). They said it right around the time when Elop came to Nokia.
And for the record, Elop never said that MeeGo is bad, just that its taking too much time. And thats something that can be sped up.
And I disagree with you thinking that Nokia can put Android on dumb phones since thats practically impossible. Android is extremely bloated and will need to be striped and re-writen from the grown up to make it work and then it wont even be Android anymore. The lower powered Android phones like the Legend or Wildfire cant run anything over 2.1 well.
We’ll see what Nokia announce tomorrow but I seriously doubt that Elop will take the stage and say “We’re going WP7 exclusively”. That will never happen.
everything you said plus this, Series 40, what Nokia uses on its low end phones, is a perfectly capable operting system on dumbphones. I used it for many years before buying my E71, and I saw how it evolved into a platform that could handle most anything I threw at it quite well. Nokia had been moving features from S60 to S40 at a snail’s pace, but what resuted was a phone that was super easy to use with one hand, and that even had organizer and music features that I used often. I even checked my mail on its primitive browser. S40 for feature phones is a fine, fine operating system.
I know you can only remember your dreams in REM sleep, but is there a consensus that you don’t dream at all in NREM sleep? I always read that dreaming occurs for about 2 hours during REM sleep, but then when you look up NREM (on Wikipedia, at least), it says dreams do occur in this state, but not as much and you typically can’t remember these.
And you are still moving around quite a bit during NREM sleep, so your brain is definitely putting out some impulses that are quite a bit different than you would experience if you were dead, even if we don’t remember them after we wake up.
I find this stuff really interesting, when I was young I would occasionally have anxiety attacks just before sleep because I was afraid of being unconscious…I got over it, but I still get a kind of wierd feeling before sleeping, knowing I’m about to go into a state I’ll have no memory of.

It’s been a couple of years since I was in a neural networks class, but cognitive scientists and computer scientists don’t know why human brains are able to compute certain types of information better than a computer and vice versa.
Human brains seem to be bad at procedural math – so the typical human being cannot make thousands of calculations in their head that a CPU does every second in order to render a webpage, yet computers as we have made them are bad at tasks like recognizing human speech or visual stimulae.
IBM’s Watson is impressive because it is using machine learning in order to understand the questions that Trebek will ask it during the Jeopardy taping and provide an answer in the form of a question within seconds. Imagine coding that with a while loop with if-else conditionals – it’s impossible. But apply machine learning algorithms on the problem, essentially allowing a computer to learn as a human being might, and suddenly it’s not a daunting task.
Certainly, it’s an interesting problem and I almost wish I was working on it (lots of Calculus involved though, unfortunately!)
I had to give up my sofa and GOOD art work once I got married to my wife.

When the discussion turned to tablets, I noticed that Will through some hate Archos way. There was some dismissing comment about Archos 7″ tablets. We haven’t heard anything from tested on the Archos line, since the October hands-on video and news follow-up in November.
The Archos 7 was looking like a good deal at $250. What has changed since then?
I was watching a discovery, or TLC special on casino cheaters, and I believe there was one story of a group of guys that were using lasers under their sleeves to measure the speed of the ball and wheel at a roulette table, and they were able to use this to predict the winning numbers.
Not really “oh so wrong” now am I? Only thing i was wrong at was that the primary OS will be WP7 instead of MeeGo. Like I said, Nokia going WP7 exclusive will never happen and it didn’t.
And the funny thing is that everyone in America think this is a great deal, understandable since MS is the only company benefiting from this deal, and everyone in Europe think this is the worst deal ever since Nokia would be better of going with MeeGo then a half baked OS like WP7 that lacks important features like Marketplace and Xbox Live in the majority of markets that WP7 is sold.
The only saving grace with this deal is that Nokia can modify WP7 any way thay want so thay can add missing features like… everything.
Loved the philosophical outtakes. Let me highly recommend a short fiction story by Jorge Luis Borges called Funes, the Memorious. Funes remembers every instant of his life.

irt: video conferencing and the lack of remote workplace.
Many managers follow the MBWA (Management by walking around) philosophy. In a remote workplace, even with video conference, means they can’t walk around. If management can’t walk around and “manage” people then what purpose do they hold? I think this is reason #1 as to why there won’t be a remote workplace in the near future.
I feel reason #2, and management certainly uses this argument a lot; people lack discipline. It apparently hard enough to get people to work while they are at work. At work they are bored and usually work just enough to not get in trouble but most will not be self-motivated. At home, they have all their normal distractions and plenty of “reasons” they couldn’t work their day. Some people (like the Whiskey Media crew) have jobs they love and I have no doubt that the same amount of great content would be produced but the chemistry might be a little lower in quality based on the lacking interworking compared to what you guys have now working in the office all day.
Just my opinions based on my experience. I managed to get the company to do 4/10’s which usually just equated to 4/10’s in office and a half day remote because “WE have to be able to reach you on that day because there is too much work hinging on you!” I am a developer/programmer and the balance between work life and home life is shady already. I was just happy to spend a day at home even if I couldn’t be unplugged from work and gaming all day!
