.. the robots show how the AI we create will be a reflection of us. The two extremes… one is built for kindness and compassion, the other is built for domination and power. They are both AI, but they differ in the purpose of their creation, and the ideals of their creators. They are a mirror of our humanity, showing it’s two sides, the light and the dark.
Every human intelligence does not come full formed, it goes through a process of education for years and years. Same for intelligent animals, like dolphins, chimps, whales, … they undergo a process of socialization and education. This is intermingled with the DNA, so nature and nurture both become important for developing behavior. This is surely what AI will end up being, won’t it?
In that case, then what if the problem is not AI, what if the problem is us, and the choices we make and the values we have, that we pass down to the AIs that we teach and raise and create? Why are we predisposed for aggression and violence? Why are we susceptible to bad judgement and gullible to bad information? Why do we undervalue or ignore many fundamental things that support our existence and advancement? How do some of us become addicted to things like money, power, drugs, and so on?

Will’s on the show, that means lots more foul language and lots more talking about and/or asides regarding Donald Trump! What fun!
Actually, Will did make a statement that I think perfectly expressed why I think I differ with him on likely every topic – he said something akin to “We were on a track to have a future like Star Trek, and now we’re on a track to have a future like Blade Runner” with the implication that Trump’s presidency is the cause. Whether he meant it or not and silly political hyperbole aside, just the idea that someone would anchor their vision of the future on silly pop-culture nonsense is pretty unnerving – even if it’s meant in a facetious sense. I mean, Star Trek can be stupid fun for sure, but anyone who thinks it’s anything more than stupid fun needs to read some grown up books and study some serious history/philosophy. I often get the sense that far too many people are far too heavily influenced by such shallow pop-culture visions, and that’s a seriously scary thought.
That aside, it’s good to hear that Foo seems to be doing well and that Will is now becoming a Twitch celebrity. Hey, I don’t have to agree with the guy to admire the risks he’s taken and wish him success!
