I think a great example of multiple frame rates in a film was The Martian. If memory serves, they overcranked the “Mars” exterior shots to feel more other-worldly. I thought it was very effective!
I don’t think the Martian was projected in variable frame rates, but they probably shot the Martian scenes it differently.
