Podcast - This Is Only a Test
Episode 554 – Introspection and Action – 6/4/20
We take a break from our usual coverage to talk about what’s going on in the world this week and continue the conversation we had on Still Untitled with Kishore and Jeremy. It’s a difficult conversation to have, but thank you for listening and we hope it’s helpful for the kind of talks and introspection you might be going through right now.

Great discussion. Helps to continue to process the injustice and add vocabulary to discussions with family and friends. Thanks guys.
Thank you for sharing openly your thoughts, fellas.
I really liked it. You’re all great and Norm is extremely thoughtful which I really liked. Jeremy is willing to keep learning which is inspiring for me too. Kishore being very frank is much appreciated.
Thank you Gents. Your country is definitely doing it tough at the moment.
It was obvious that thing are affecting you heavily. Hope it gets better. Stay safe
Thanks guys, A+ as usuall. I’ve been consuming a lot of this content from a various groups, not just tech like Marques Brownlee, but other sides, other perspectives, NutnFancy, Casey, etc. Sitting here in South Australia I’m naive to the whole situation and feel somewhat like Jeremy, where I didn’t grow up in this world or wasn’t exposed to the truth. I cannot pretend to imagine what is like for those who live it and I appreciate you taking the time to give me/us your points of view. We may never meet and live 13,000 kms apart but having listened to you guys since the beginning I feel an afinity to you and feel we have a friendship and I respect what you have to say as if we were face to face friends IRL. Thank-you.
Part of my own journey is growing ready to be uncomfortable when that’s appropriate, as it is now. And recognising that I live in so much comfort when so many have so little comfort.
There seem to have been a lot of ‘off brand’ broadcasts/podcasts this week where ‘regular people’ choose to add their voices to Black Lives Matter. And I’m here for that.
Thank you
Thank you guys for the very heart felt and emotionally tolling discussion. This is the kind of reflection that is the start of moving towards a better place in our country and even as we all have our own internal process, listening to others hash it out is always very helpful.
I think the best approach is not to look for racism in “the system” but in people, all people. The way I see it, 50 million years of evolution has built into humans the instinct to identify strongly with a tribe, and that means not trusting other tribes. This creates biases for and against race, nationality, political party, etc. It’s all the same problem and it’s an instinct we CAN’T ERASE. It has to be understood and manipulated. The only way to overcome tribal competition is to see ourselves as all in the same tribe. That’s what people are trying to do by saying “ALL lives matter, and “We should ALL stand for the flag.” It puts us all on the same team. Identity politics goes the opposite direction. It reinforces tribalism and tries to take from one tribe to give to another in the name of fairness. I think that black people are having the hardest time because the “African American community” is one of the most identifiable tribes in the country and triggers toxic Us vs Them instincts. Separate tribal identities will always drive us apart. A greater common tribal identity is the only thing that will bring us together.
Longtime listener and I never miss a show.
Thanks for this show and don’t hesitate to do this again.
I would love a more guests and a more diverse group. I would love to see Simone Giertz as a guest — I am pretty certain that she has never been on, I’m sure she is busy, but I think she would be great.
I think Rich Rebuilds from Simone’s Truckla build would be a great guest as well.
