Inside Adam Savage’s Tour Bus

Adam gives Will a walkthrough of his tour bus, which, yes, appears to have a lower back tattoo on it. Adam explains how he’s spending his time on the road, and the number one rule of the bus.

  1. Awesome! What a nice Christmas present 🙂

That thing that you guys were talking about that looks like a “hatch”, reminds me of the hatch in the Millenium Falcon that Lando goes through in the end of The Empire Strikes Back to bring Luke into the Falcon.

…man… that was a nerdy post.

  2. Could be that the auto focus was having trouble in such a dark location. Also, I don’t think Joey filmed this… not to say that the camera man didn’t do a good job, but I just noticed that it wasn’t Joey’s reflection in the mirror 🙂

  3. I can’t be the only guy having problems with this sites embedded video player.

FYI guys if you want to learn more I know the folks at http://www.hwhcorp.com/ in Moscow Iowa that make those tour bus & RV slide-out systems. Pretty nifty mechanisms.

  4. One of the aircraft I work on has an external button to turn on the masticator in the lav dump reservoir. We call it the chunker.

  5. I don’t even watch Mythbusters, but Adam is great and I will always support Tested!

PS. That bus reminds me of a shabby dance parlor. 🙂

  6. hey guys, can you specify what conditions you’re trying to play this video back in? desktop/mobile? which OS/browser? i’ll relay to our devs. thanks!

  7. Ha, good eye! I’ve been working a bit with the good crew down in the BermanBraun south offices who have been more than happy to help out on shoots when I’m unavailable (production, and post). They have lots of fun equipment down there; I think it’s nice to get a different look every now and then.

  8. I’m on Firefox v26, OS X 10.8.5. No issues with the YouTube provided videos, but the only way for the non-YT videos to play, is to drop the quality to almost the minimum…360p. Sometimes 480p works. On YouTube, I don’t have issues with 1080 or 720.

  9. The issue with the premium content player (for me at least) seems to be entirely due to poor loading speeds for the video content – The player itself seems to work well and identically across desktop browsers (or any browsers able to load the flash player), but the loading speed is so slow that it’s necessary to drop the quality and allow quite a long time for the video to pre-load before attempting to watch it.

If you start watching too soon and the video progress exceeds the point to which it has pre-loaded there is a wonky side effect in which the video appears to become choppy – what seems to be happening is that the player isn’t being smart enough to pause and build up a buffer of loaded content when it runs out, it instead attempts to play tiny pieces as soon as they are received but immediately has to stop again when it runs out of loaded content, switching back and forth between those states rapidly and producing a choppy playback effect.

For your info, my internet connection normally measures around 20Mbps or over, and my computer and connection are regularly sufficient to stream HD videos on youtube, netflix and a variety of other services.

  10. Besides the loading, stuttering, and buffering issues others have brought up. The player also poorly performs when video has been loaded with hiccups and sync issues. I’m running chrome on OSX Mavericks on a MBP and I’m able to use other video streaming services just fine, but this one really isn’t working well.

  11. The video did load very slowly. Oddly enough, for me it only seems to happen about one in three times I view a premium video, the other times they load fine… :/

  12. iMac OSX10.9.1/chrome/1.33Mbps. Hitches & stutters. I try to lower the quality but it the player instead restarts the video at (apparently) the same quality rather than lowering it.

  13. You sleep feet facing the front on a tour bus so you don’t hit your head in an accident or if the bus stops short. According to one of my old tour bus drivers, many people have been hurt from not obeying this rule.

  14. Doing a quick google search for, “Masticating Toilet” I think you guys actually mean “Macerating Toilet”, as in it chops things up.

Mythbusters request: Can you dispose of a human hand in a macerating toilet?

  15. This is great stuff. Cant wait for more premium stuff. Yes the player has been acting up and videos are being played on 480p after atleast 50% buffer.

  16. Safari 6.1.1, OSX 10.8.5, 1080p and yup… buffering issues with the embedded player playback as well. But I let it sit for a moment, buffer and then enjoy it.

  17. Behind the magic of the tour is great . But can we get some clips of the show on premium?. Cant get to the tour where I am from and it would be great to see the show.

  18. Doing a quick google search for, “Masticating Toilet” I think you guys actually mean “Macerating Toilet”, as in it chops things up.

Mythbusters request: Can you dispose of a human hand in a macerating toilet?

I’d assume the toilet is equipped with something like this.

  19. I have that same Filson toiletry bag. Never thought I’d care so much about such a thing but it’s been great for traveling.

  20. Loved these two videos of Jamie & Adam’s buses.

The video pausing every 30 seconds is getting a little annoying, however..

  21. Slow load speeds, in windows 7 64 bit and chrome… Chops and pauses..
On ipad… Just extremly slow load times.

  22. The macerating toilet feature is commonly called the “shit grinder”. Most tour busses do not have it, and those that do the driver won’t tell you it has one for fear of someone using it. Because rule #1 on a tour bus is don’t crap on the tour bus.

Adam’s bus is what is refereed to as a “star coach” with the rear lounge being converted to a bedroom and the inclusion of a second toilet and shower in the rear. The more common configuration has one toilet, in the front, no shower, and sleeps between 8 and 12 with lounges in the front and rear. You always sleep feet forward on the bus. Your feet, legs and knees absorb impact a lot better than your head.

The better part of the past 15 years of my life have been spent on tour busses. They are incredible pieces of machinery.
