Premium: CES Trendspotting and Michael Bay’s Breakdown

After press conference day at CES, Will and Norm hang out with the team from ArsTechnica to recollect the weirdest moments from the day. Bending televisions and smart appliances make the cut, but we all just want to talk about Michael Bay’s incredible CES performance. Of which we have video. That you should watch. Right now.

  1. Seems strange that this is premium. Previously they did nightly live shows, and now the little discussion they do have is behind the paywall.

They must be struggling for premium content more than I had thought.

Struggling to find something worth talking about at CES might be more accurate.

  3. Same issue even at lowest res for me

    Same for me.

Is there an easy way to download the video file for local playback?

  4. Not as of yet, but working on making that happen. If you’re watching on desktop, try pausing at the start and letting most of the video buffer before playing. The 360p for this vid is about 350MB.

  5. Him leaving, the way he did it, is nothing to be mocked or be ashamed of. He was prepared for one, the pressure was one and a big portion of that one thing died when when he needed it. I hope he has someone to talk to.

  6. I’m just gonna chime in that I’ve been having video issues as well. I was wondering if it was a compression issue with the actual video file, but to my eyes even the 1080p file looks pretty lossy so I’m guessing that’s not the issue, though the fact that the 360p version is 350 megs seems contradictory. Perhaps the file coming out of the camera is lossy but the final export after the edit is in a Prores or DNxHD codec not suited for streaming.

Regardless, it’s slow to load, choppy to play, and almost completely unresponsive when I have more than a couple tabs/processes running on my MBP.

  7. I’ve noticed a lot of comments on several different videos lately regarding issues with playback.

FWIW, I haven’t had problems with any of my devices playing any of the videos.

My devices: Samsung phone on Verizon, HP laptop (windows/chrome) and Nexus 10 tablet on Cox (cable) Internet

  8. Had no issues with this video, but experienced the same things as many others before. Something odd is up with that player. :p

  9. For some reason, I don’t think the guy that sends oil drillers to an asteroid to blow it up, is going to have any logical answers for you, as far as curved TVs (or anything else, for that matter) are concerned…

  10. Although his point may be crude, I would also expect this type of coverage to be part of the basic site and not behind a paywall. Otherwise we have nothing from Will and Norm at CES right now.

  11. I don’t think “unavailable” content should be shoved in the face of non-subscribers like this. It seems rude and pushy. I would suggest displaying it as a minimized headline in the blogroll or not display it at all.

The blue “Subscribe” link is really tacky too… and I’m logged in.

  12. Thanks. It works great.

I think I see why the playback is an issue. Large files coupled with reduced bandwidth. Downloading the video….I’m only getting around 300KB/sec. It’s not my end which is causing the slowdown. Maybe the server is overloaded?

  13. I don’t kind the minimal cost to support the site. The richness of premium content has not wowed me but I still don’t mind supporting something I have enjoyed free for so long. Tested.com is absolutely part of my nightly routine even before the days of Adam and Jamie. I do really enjoy Adam’s contributions however….

  14. While some people are having trouble with the video player, I actually remarked on how much better it was than youtube for me. It started playing in full HD almost instantly, with youtube I usually have at least a second of load time and it doesn’t reach full HD until probably 10 seconds into the video.

I hear the youtube buffering “bug” is mostly a location problem which usually affects US users the most, due to bandwidth throttling.

I’ve never had any issues with youtube playback. This new player however stutters nearly every time.

  16. For those of you having buffering issues do the following
(only works if you have enough ram):

    1. Right Click the video and select “settings”
    2. Click the Folder icon
    3. Set the maximum storage space to unlimited
    4. Close the settings menu
    5. Wait for video to fully buffer before watching (may have
to hit play and then pause).
