Premium: Norm Chews 30-Year-Old Gum (‘Nuff Said)

After I boasted about my willingness to try vintage gum, a reader sent over a care package with packs of 80s-era trading cards, gum intact. Here’s what happens when you try to chew bad gum that’s been sandwiched between wax paper and cardboard for 30 years. It’s not pretty. (Apologies for the focusing issue in the video. I was testing the video capabilities of the Sony A7 camera, and auto-focus switched on after we framed up and focused on the background. It’s artsy.)

  1. There’s an earlier episode of Good Job Brain! podcast, where they do something very similar…There was an equal amount of regret.

  2. I haven’t had a chance to watch the video yet (at work), so apologies if this is specifically dealt with, but where do you rate it on your personal disgusting foods continuum? Does it fall, say, between nacho mints and Cadbury Fingers? Or is it someplace below Finnish licorice?

  3. i hate licorice for its flavor, but it was the flaky texture of this gum that really repulsed me. also, some of it smelled rancid.

  4. Wow. I didn’t know there was anything in trading-card gum that could even go rancid. I haven’t felt that let down by reality since I found out that stainless steel can rust under some conditions. 🙂

  5. Great, now I have the “Lisa needs braces – Dental Plan!” refrain on endless repeat in my head.

  6. How about some 4000 year old bread from Egypt next. Then if that goes over well we can move on to some Sous Vide Mammoth. If it isn’t the most discussing meal ever it will at least be the most expensive… Well at least until we clone up some Plateosaurus for desert. 🙂

  7. Damn it, now I do too.

I love how Will plays fast and loose with Norm’s well-being. You’re a trooper, Chan.

  8. Kids let this be a lesson, when someone older than you says “I wouldn’t do that if I were you.” chances are they know what they are talking about. 🙂

  9. OK, watched it now. I have to admit I was skeptical that even Will and Norm could make a video of Norm chewing manky old gum worth watching, let alone paying for, but I was so wrong. This is hilarious. I need to rip the audio so I can have Will yelling “It’s the SAME FUCKING GUM!” as the new you-have-mail sound on my Droid.

  10. Norm it was dry and powdery when i was a kid but the more you chewed the better it got. you reminded me of the youtube video of the guy who drunk the 20 year old crystal pepsi. . You guys are great .

  11. Will’s knowing, amused face when he goes “That’s true” to “This gum may be older than you are” made me laugh out loud.

  12. Since I’m from Australia I really want to send a tube of Vegemite and have Will and Norman have a tea spoon of it.

  13. You may not be aware of it, but the U.S. government takes a mighty dim view of biological and chemical warfare. 🙂

  14. I didn’t touch the stuff when it was new. No way in heck would you get me to try it 30 years old. 😉

  15. They live in San Francisco, I’m sure there are some stores that sell it here, we should compile a list and send the guys shopping. I know my local bakery sells Marmite, so not *too* far off. :p

  16. WOW I totally remember having at least a couple packs of those cards including DK.

I recall at least once cutting my mouth on a piece of card pack gum but most of the time it’d crumble and I’d need a tooth pick to pry chunks out from between my teeth.

  17. If you want something really bad, I think I may still have some leftover MRE’s from when I was in the Marines. Though, they are ~7-12+ years old at this point (from when I got them) and probably a high chance of being spoiled since they’re only supposed to have a shelf life of 5 years at best.

  18. I remember trying to chew the gum from the baseball card packs when I was young and they broke into pieces the exact same way then too lol

  19. Agreed with the others, I tried a bunch of the gum from card packs as a kid hoping the next one would be better, Nope, they never did. They’re actually worse than the “candy” that’s in the asian toy boxes. At least that was basically powdered sugar and starch and would actually dissolve, not just melt then get stuck between your teeth in a goopy mess.

HIlarious video but check the focus next time. 😉
