Premium: Putting Together Papercraft Models

To give you a sense of how long it takes to put one of the Terada Mokei papercraft dioramas together, Norm builds part of one in real-time in his garage workshop.

  1. Inside Norman Chan’s Cave, good stuff 🙂 Nice to have a show highlighting that you don’t need a shop of Adam’s caliber to do fun projects and show off awesome things you’ve gathered/made.

  2. Great video. simple but extremely tedious project but it comes out great though. Hopefully once you have enough of them together you’ll combine these mini scenes into a huge scene.

  3. Is there any way to include a small list of the tools that you use, maybe a sentence or two about recommendations, or construction tips and tricks? Only reason I ask is because there isn’t a feature to bookmark the portions of your videos (yet, hopefully) where you describe your process. Also, what measurements are the small pieces of cardstock that you’re using to mount and display the dioramas?

  4. I have built a few of these, though not these ones specifically. The buildings by Sankei are awesome and are the same material and process. I just have an Xacto knife set (blades dull easily from paper) and white glue. I also use a cutting board and rulers for any long edge I need to cut. Tweezers also help a ton.

  5. The reality is that most of the pushcart vendors in NYC tend to be immigrants and rather skinny. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one that fat. Also, depending on the line, Subway entrances are at the back of the sidewalk near the building wall with the back of the entrance facing the street. The exception to that is the IRT entrances that were part of the first subway. Look at streetview and you can see how NYC street furniture looks.

  6. Nice job, Norm. That was very cool. Videos like that are exactly what belongs on the premium feed.

I agree with javaboy. It’s gems like this that keep me subscribing 🙂

  7. These do seem very interesting. I looked at his website and it looks like you could make a whole city if you wanted. Its kinda pricey to ship from Japan though…

  8. It would be awesome to schedule a live build some time with a chat feature so the premium members can talk to each other and the hosts!

  9. How come there’s no download link for this one? I had some playback trouble (OSX Chrome as well as iOS Safari) and went digging through sourcecode to get the video to download.

Looking forward to watching it once it’s downloaded
BTW, download options are great for us bandwidth-impaired Australians! 😉

  10. Great video. Also, I would like an option of a time laps video that would be 2x speed if that is possible. Great job on the project. and like this video series tons.

  11. Aziz! Light! Nice video but more light on the subject would have been better. You casted a shadow a lot of the time.

  12. That was really cool, !

Thank you for introducing me to the wonderful world of Terada Mokei. There are a bunch of these little paper kits that I want to do now; especially that Toyota FJ Cruiser kit.. 🙂

  13. I am finally catching up to this video. I am looking forward to trying out a few of these kits, and this was really helpful. Thanks Norm!
