Premium: Will and Norm Geek Out at the Mondo Gallery

While in Austin for SXSW, we made a trip to the famous Mondo art gallery for a special exhibition of Disney movie posters. Norm gets indecisive about what screenprints he wants to buy, but it all works out at the end!

  1. Hey Norm! Those are some beautiful posters – especially the Peter Pan! What is the backstory on these posters – are they actual promotional posters such as you’d see in the theater lobbies or are they artist tributes to their favorite Disney films/characters?

  2. they aren’t promotional posters, but officially licensed one with Disney. I think Disney ends up owning the rights to use them anywhere (t-shirts, mugs, etc) but the terms of the deal mean that these will be the only screenprint run. i love that peter pan one too!

  3. A very well done video. Nice job.

The first question that comes to mind: how did you get them home? Did you carry them on the plane?

  4. Those are some gorgeous prints. Film poster collecting is a neat hobby. I have original theatrical poster prints from Empire Strikes back and Return of the Jedi (waiting to find the right price on A New Hope) I’ve had them signed by numerous cast and crew members.

You ought to do these justice with good frames. Unfortunately, custom framing is incredibly expensive but there is really nothing like something that just fits perfectly. A nice matte to surround it, and a matching frame both go a long way. Unfortunately, it can be more expensive than the poster itself.

Then there’s linen backing. Older, more fragile prints benefit a lot with linenbacking. Theatrical posters before the late 80s, early 90s were usually shipped to theaters folded, rather than rolled as they are now. That leaves them with creases. Linenbacking basically glues the poster to a sheet of heavy fabric, almost like canvas really. They use a roller in the process to adhere the print to it and as a result the folds pretty much disappear. Plus it preserves the print too. I’ve had mine done for about $100 for a standard One Sheet (27″x41″). It’s a pretty common archival/preservation technique but your typical custom framing shop won’t do it. But if you ask them, they may have recommendations. I went through a local gallery in Boston that specializes in 1900s-1930s large format advertisements that were predominantly European origin for travel and tourism.

  5. Hey guys, I’m a poster artist and I’ve done and I’m still doing stuff for Mondo. I’m also a huge Tested fan and I’ve been meaning to contact you for a while now to ask you if you would be interested in me doing a Tested limited edition screen print? This video convinced me that I should. I love what you guys are doing so I thought that maybe you would be down for something like that?

Here is my web site if you want to check my work http://www.markomanev.com

  6. This reminds me, I can’t remember if I was turned on to it from here but check out the documentary on screen printing called Just Like Being There. It’s on Netflix streaming and well worth a watch!

  7. Yeah, what I have i the store is available, but if you are particulary interested in something please feel free to contact me via my site.

  8. Awesome, hopefully in the next few weeks then.

Ones I’m mainly interested in are all from the Noir Series (Mutants, Caped Crusader, Webslinger, Wild Animal, Sentinel of Liberty).

  9. When you bought the Pooh poster did you tell them it was for your daughter, or were you worried you would get a reaction, like that of Elijah Price to Jeb in Unbreakable?

  10. This video is great. I love seeing people geek out on things they enjoy. I love poster art and have gotten a couple of Mondo prints in the past. Due to the bad influence of this site. 😉

Like many others, I can’t wait to see what comes up with!

  11. okay, I just watched this and was listening to Carmina Burana at the same time, awesome! Loved it!
