Norm Drinks Soylent, Day 1

Tested reader Luke sent over a week’s supply of Soylent for us to test! Unfortunately, this is the old Soylent formula, which isn’t representative of the current product being sold–we’ll wait until we can buy the latest batch before an official review. But we can’t let good Soylent go to waste, so Norm is committing to a week of living off of this future food. 1. Have not watched it fully yet, but if this goes anything like anyone else’s week/month/period of Soylent, this is gonna be quite a week.

  2. Anyone else reminded of the scene from The Matrix when the crew of the Nebuchadnezzar is sitting around the table eating that stuff that “has everything the body needs”? Except the woman in the red dress of course!

  3. I assume this is like protein powder stuff, Though I guess im looking like jamie and having a jamieoff would be funny

OR it’s like weightgain4000, I don’t know if norm should be imitating cartman

  4. i very enjoyed with this video …Will you made me laugh with tears…you r very much like those..*up.

    Enjoy soylent Norm.

  5. From what I’ve read, you might not want to share close quarters with Norm for awhile. Soylent tends to be an impressive natural gas producer… if you know what I mean.

  6. Will’s disdain for this product is hands down my favorite thing about the video. “What kind of fucking super duper blender do these people expect you to have?” Could not stop laughing.

  7. I swear they need to put in a vote challenge on what the outcome of this weeklong of Soylent is gonna end up as.

On another note, this video had me bust out laughing at work. So glad everyone else here has headphones in.

    Good Luck Norm.

  8. Pineapple and coconut or separate, French vanilla flavoring, use quick either chocolate or strawberry, or add tang or something like that adding doctor pepper is good to, maybe just add coke.just thought about add Reese peanut butter cups or pieces

  9. Norm,

For the record, a local news guy went on a all liquid diet. He said it was dangerous and required close medical supervision. See a doctor before you do this.

not a good idea. You may find yourself in the hospital.

  10. I don’t know if one could consider partially rinsing out a container (under a faucet with just cold tap water) as “washing” it… 😂

  11. I still can’t believe some idiot named his food product Soylent. He obviously named it without ever having watched Soylent Green.

  12. I’m just picturing around day three where the video is just 15 minutes of Will standing outside the office toilet door shaking his head to sounds of Norm’s distress.

Day four is the same, but Will is wearing a hazmat suit.

  13. according to the nutritional information on the Soylent website, each pouch contains 100% of your recommended daily fiber intake. I’ve always leaned towards the thought that a lot of people actually don’t get their recommended dose of fiber, so it may run the opposite direction from what you’d expect. Lots more fiber than your used to can be equally festive. Also, fun fiber related story, have you ever seen those “45 calories and Delightful” Sara Lee breads? Well, I was looking at the bread one day in the store, and suddenly thought “how the hell do they take half the calories out of bread without halving the serving size?” and then I remembered something, and promptly checked the ingredients on the package. Sure enough, Cellulose fiber. They use powdered paper to bulk the dough, and add non digestible mass. I hate to imagine what having that much extra fiber in your diet probably does.

  14. I’ll concede the point Kim. I still think it’s a terrible name to market a food product. Perhaps he will follow up with Dahmer-boost or Donner Party Platters.

  15. You don’t see the difference between a tongue-in-cheek name based on a schlocky 80s movie, and names based on real-life serial killers/cannibalism?

He knew the reference would resonate heavily with technology-interested, pop-culture savvy people in the age groupthe product was aimed at. He also knew that media would jump all over him either way, so self-awareness of its alien nature beats them to the punchline and to a degree makes comparisons silly.

I’d say it is a ingenious name for the niche product it is, and a bold one… since he had make sure focus struck the balance between a, potentially overly, humorous brand and the serious research and development at its foundation.

  16. After all the cool stuff you guys have talked about being able to access with Tested Premium membership, Norm crusading though a weeks worth of Soylent is what finally got me to subscribe. God speed

  17. This is like one of the mystery builds, except, there actually is time to guess what the outcome will be. My guess is that Norm will find it harder and harder to drink the same stuff over and over, and will give up before the week is up. I give it 3 days.

  18. The NY Times article (titled: The Soylent Revolution Will Not Be Pleasurable) on this vanilla-flavored sludge, is a must read for anyone wondering what Norm is about to endure..

  19. I’m actually quite interested in the outcome of this. For me, food is a chore that I hate. I don’t like trying new things, going out for a meal gives me mild anxiety, and travelling abroad does too.

For me, the idea behind soylent is perfect. I don’t have to worry about eating, just take all the nutrition in that I need.

It isn’t going to be for everyone, and this test should be good with the healthy (over healthy) disdain that Will is holding over it. 😉 I hope you can keep a fairly open mind about it.

  20. They talked about Soylent on a TV show where I live not long ago and asked a doctor if this was enough for the human body to work. His answer was: “Yes, but he wouldn’t recommend it”. Good luck, Norm!

  21. Despite the….sound effects of the mixing….I still want to try it one day. Curious about potential weight loss, thinking about replacing my lunch with Soylent.

Thanks for using yourself as a test bed, Norm!

  22. This is going to be a great week. Godspeed Norm.

Also, one of my friends knows the creator of Soylent. He said its basically the same stuff as medical liquid food without all of the FDA regulations imposed for being medical grade, which is why the price is reasonable. At least you aren’t getting this piped into your stomach, that would be a whole different kind of test.

  23. This is a new tv-show genre: Reality Comedy.

Although I’m very curious about the results, I’ll also watch because this is funny as hell.

  24. Intrigued about this, so good to see Tested covering it.

As an aside anyone able to shed any light on were Norms T shirt is from? I tried asking him on twitter, but no response.

  25. I love the idea of this product, I always hate breakfast and lunch because I’m always up at 5:00am and have a full school and work schedule till 6:00pm. My days are generally so packed between those times that eating is just annoying.

Given that I still will probably never use this product but I just like the idea it’s a real thing.

  26. I love Norm’s sign off: “I’m so hungry.”

And Will, show a little bit of support. Norm’s about to make a hideous, hideous mistake. Don’t rub it in. Be a little encouraging. Try not to laugh. Well, too hard.

Norm, sir, I salute you. The bravery you are showing is commendable, if not a teeny bit inadvisable.

Note: I have not seen any of the other videos yet.

  27. Watching Norm try to make this was just like me trying to cook for the first time! I can’t wait to see how this week turns out!
