  1. McRoberts pretty normal! Though i wasn’t able to cram as much food in my stomach as I was accustomed to. Maybe it shrunk! But now, everything back to normal.

  2. It’s good to see that you survived your vanilla sludge ordeal!

After drinking nothing but liquids for a week, did you ever find yourself missing being able to chew on food? I think having to do nothing but drinking stuff day after day would drive me crazy after awhile.

  3. If you could have tried another additive besides the berries, bananas, and peanut butter, what would you have done? I imagine some fro’-yo’ would have been pretty good!

  4. please fo the love of god.. i paid to get some video content can you please fix the video streaming srevice so it works in Australia??? i’m sick of the buffering i feel like im living in 2005

  5. I agree man, all of the other videos i watch on youtube but with the premium i can’t. Great content just wish i could watch immediately after i press play instead of watching a minute and letting it buffer for a bit watching then let it buffer then finishing.

  6. For me in NZ, for the Premium content, I press play, then immediately press pause, and let it buffer for a few seconds, and then it’s fun.

Premium content is definitely worth it! Well done on the Solyent, but actually, watching you struggle with the blender was a big part of the fun! Don’t edit out the awkward bits!

  7. I think I will be trying this as a breakfast lunch replacement, as a guide at a nature center I have little to no time to prepare food or carry/store it. Thanks TESTED

  8. Good stuff Norm. This was a very cool series! I liked seeing your daily videos and seeing how quickly you “were over” the soylent. 🙂

I think no matter what something like soylent shouldn’t be a complete food substitute, but it is a convenient meal replacement.

And yes Berries do nothing for taste. I mix berries in with my protein shakes and they barely modify the flavour, I just do it to increase my fruit uptake.

  9. So, premium membership gets lego building and soylent? Then the cool vids funded by premium are used to make public content that are actually premium topics/quality? I get the public special topics build the subscriber base, but just thought premium content would be at least on par with the public content, if not more exclusive? Just some thoughts since joining, of course I am an avid supporter. So take this as critique/feedback as intended, not condemnation.

  10. I think it might be time for to test some blenders or at least upgrade… the garage sale version just is not doing it. Although it was enjoyable watching you struggle, I get the idea you have spent very little time in the kitchen, you might want to do something about that as well.

  11. I’m glad you did this series. I actually ordered Soylent back in June, it hasn’t arrived yet, but I wasn’t sure to use it as a lunch replacement or as a mostly diet food. Thanks for your take.

  12. based the first videos of this soylent challenge – can we agree that norm and will disproved the IDIOT part of this food mix LOL 🙂

  13. I just started catching up on this premium content & was surprised to see it skip from Day 5 to Day 7. I guess it’s no biggie, but it was a tad surprising.

  14. I was kind of disappointed to see that he didn’t bother to film anything at all on Day 6. At the very least, give us a 1 minute update video and say something on camera.

I mean, I was a little miffed at the time that this was filmed. But, I was over it five minutes after watching the last video in the series.. 😉

  15. I did the week, and just ordered another supply. Thinking about doing the subscription so I never run out.

My experience has been WAY differernt since I have been using the newest 1.6 version of the powder. in my opinion it tastes fantastic. I have not been adding anything to it like bananas or berries. I prefer to eat those on their own so I have some variety during the day… and… well… not using a blender to mix soylent to reduce clean up.

The pitcher that came with my supply was perfect for shaking prep. Adding water, powder and shaking, then final amount of water and shaking to complete, is perfect. No mess at all. No blender to clean up, zero waste. The shake it prep is thorough, no clumps at all. I mix up a batch the night before stick it in the fridge and the next morning I am all set.

My first week was no problems. Only had soylent the whole week without much issue. However, i am NOT a dedicated “foodie”. I love good food, love the taste of good food, but it’s either expensive or time consuming to make good food for EVERY MEAL. In the “tech” biz, I get engrossed in work, will skip meals, or just eat crap to save time. Now… I LOVE IT… just drink a good breakfast, or lunch and dinner, or all three, or skip one and eat something good and tasty.

I gained weight on soylent. I actually gained a few pounds. Apparently I wasn’t getting my full caloric intake in the past because of skipping meals, or not eating when I should. Drinking those three meals a day, getting a 2000 calorie diet consistently every day, put on just a bit of extra weight which was GREAT because I was getting kind of skinny.

I have to say the taste of the new 1.6 version is FANTASTIC. I love it. I drink it straight with nothing else and ENJOY IT. It fills me up but does still leave me a bit hungry. However, I think that most people “eat till they feel full” which is a bad thing. In the past because I wasn’t eating 3 solid meals a day, I did not get those overpowering hunger pangs. With soylent 3 times a day, I believe it INCREASED my between meal appetite.

Before I complain about some “negative” elements of this video series, I will say I learned about Soylent HERE on TESTED and seeing this experiment is WHY I bought it despite some of the negative opinions expressed by Will (no probs Will, I loved your work on tested and will miss you not being here as much in the future. Your AWESOME cooking vids are some of my favorites.)

I have some complaints about this series of vids. First off the generally skeptical and negative opinion and subtext was not objective fir an “experiment”. I would hope that there is no prior opinions BEFORE testing a product like this. Will did have a very skeptical attitude which came through. Also the FIRST day the preparation was VERY BADLY DONE and should have shown how easy it is to prepare instead of making a huge avoidable mess. Even later vids showed a mess that was avoidable. Making it LOOK MESSY and difficult to prepare was not objective.

The too small blender, the carelessness and spillage, was something I NEVER ENCOUNTERED even ONCE preparing mine and I was shaking not blending. If you plan on using a blender make sure you have one big enough or at a minimum do it with batches so you don’t make a mess. It’s not hard to measure in the right amounts so you don’t spill it.

I completely excuse Will from any skepticism. I know and appreciate EXACTLY why he was skeptical and not a huge fan of this product. His fantastic cooking videos show his love for good and unique foods and flavors and cooking and preparing foods so they taste their best. Soylent is the antithesis of his love of food. I feel the same way but to a lesser degree. I LOVE good food BUT… I don’t need it all the time at every meal. In fact good food tastes BETTER after only having soylent for days or extended time.

Not sure about the cost yet. I have to do some analysis on my grocery bills and eating out bills to determine if it’s a break even, loss or savings in the long run. My first batch was about $3 a meal. It could be much cheaper if I buy MORE at a time as they give discounts for bigger supplies. Probably cheaper if I add stuff to it like bananas and other fruits to extend it.

One thing I really missed were “savory” flavors and crunchy textures. I did find though it was very easy to overcome hunger pangs, or the strong desire to “snack” by eating crunchy rice cakes, or popcorn. This really helped give a feel of eating without getting a bunch of junk.

Thanks for dong this test, I doubt would have EVER found Soylent if I hadn’t seen it here first.
