Tested Lessons: Basic Sculpting, Part 5

And here’s the finale of our week of sculpting lessons with Frank Ippolito! Will and Norm struggle to get the forms right on their full-scale portrait replicas, while Frank works on his own sculpt and gives tips along the way. It’s a whole lot of fun! 1. I don’t know about everyone else, but I think it would be pretty awesome if there were realistic busts of the Tested guys done by Frank. They would make great decoration for the backgrounds of the videos.

  2. I am thoroughly impressed with both Will’s and Norm’s sculpts. For 2 fellows that had virtually no sculpting, experience, you’ve both created some very recognizable forms. Norm’s Orc, I think, really captured the look and feel of his reference mask. Will’s mummy also looks fantastic but it also looks an awful lot like Christopher Walken 🙂

  3. Good stuff, I decided I was just going to watch them but now I think I’m gonna have to have a go.

Agree that Will and Norm did pretty damn well for novices.

    Now… what to sculpt!

  4. I just started this video but I have to echo others when I say that this has surprisingly been my favorite Premium series so far. I am not a modelmaker, but I have loved watching teach Will and Norm how to not suck! You freakin’ rock, Frank.

and you guys are doing a fantastic job of picking this up so quickly. You guys rock, too! I still would like to come out there and teach you both how to weld some day 🙂 I think that would make a pretty awesome little video.

  5. awe, I’m sad this is over. I would love to see a round two of this. I actually broke out my Playdoh last night and made a tiny minion even though I have only ever sculpted once in my life. It was fun using the Playdoh for something other than Occupational Therapy lol

  6. Highly Enjoyable! I’m impressed how well Will and Norm’s sculptures looked given only a day’s tutelage.

I shall need to source some local equivalents of the supplies as Monster Makers has a US$250 minimum on international orders, plus I’d hate to think what the international shipping costs to New Zealand would be given the size and weight.

  7. Really enjoyable and informative series all week. Hope to see more in the future. Thanks Frank, Will, Norm, and Joey.

  8. Great series! I’d like to see more these kind of sculpting videos. Very informative yet relaxing. I feel like I’ve gained a rank in sculpting skill just by watching this 🙂 I’m definitely going to try this out myself. Unfortunately no “advanced” clays are sold here, international orders are impossibly expensive so I’m stuck with air-drying modelling clays.

  9. Great introduction. The Stan Winston School is a great website and don’t let the small cost deter you if your interested. It has equal parts entertainment and educational value and a free trial to boot. I also noticed a lot of posts about materials. As a sculptor myself, I’d recommend buying what you can find when your learning, cheaper is better. It keeps the learning work from becoming precious while you develop skill in handling the tools and recognizing and making forms.

  10. This is great. I have no intent to do sculpture, but it’s interesting to see how it works. Norm and Will did great picking up the techniques. Frank’s a good teacher. More of this sort of show!

  11. Hi guys,

I signed up to follow this sculpting series. It looks great.

Any idea how I can order the Monster Clay in Belgium?

Amazon nor Monstermakers (below 250$) deliver here.

Maybe a alternative to the Monster Clay?

    Kind regards.

  12. Love it. It’s great to see Will and Norm be terrible at something, particularly when there’s a professional available to tell them what they’ve done wrong.

  14. Yeah, I love this sort of video series. Even if it’s something that I might not ever dive into myself, it’s interesting to see how things are done, if for no other reason than I can appreciate the work that I see more.

  15. You can try Chavant Clay (NSP Medium) it’s a bit more easy to get hold of. Not sure how it stacks up against Monster Clay, as I’ve not tried it yet (still have a stockpile of the old “Klean Klay”).

Should be roughly in the same ball park and probably cheaper.

  16. Love these videos! Hoping to try and get some of that Monster Clay and basic tools here soon to start practicing.

  17. Would be awesome if you did a video series for what do after sculpting is done. Like mold making and the different types of masks. like latex and silicone

  18. I agree! I would love to see the steps for making a resin casting out of a monster clay sculpture that can then be airbrushed and displayed.

  19. Throughout this series, I’m reminded of How to Draw What You See. Learning how to look at what is in front of you is such an essential component of rendering a likeness.
