Tested Lessons: Basic Animatronics, Part 2

In this second episode of this year’s simple animatronics build, we dig into the Skull Shoppe skulls to figure out a way to actuate the jaw motion. That involves some dusty dremeling and fitting of the servos using 3d-printed mounts. Follow along by signing up for a membership here!

  1. Can’t wait for part 3, and for Halloween to come and give me a reason to do animatronics monsters!!

  2. Shoppe is pronounced like shop, just like the pseduo-archaic “Ye” as in the “Ye shoppe” being pronounced “the”.

For “ye”, it developed gradually, as the grapheme Y was used to replace the letter þ (thorn, now replaced by the digraph “th”) in print because their graphemes look nearly identical in handwritten scripts.

In the case of shoppe however, that is just a “stylistic” choice.

  3. That analysis determining the pivot point for the servo makes a lot of sense. I can see that being a common rookie mistake.

  4. Should have commented on video one about this, however you are able to order parts cheap from a site called hobbyking. Their servos if my memory is correct are around a few dollars a piece. Also depending on the radio you purchase you may not be able to program out problems as the cheaper radio/transmitters are not always programmable.

Also would you be able to show the wiring setup for the wall wart/plug power source option? That is the one part of this project I foresee having difficulty figuring out.

    Thanks

P.S. The pointy things that go on the servos are called control horns

  5. What you guys are making are really four-bar linkages made up of the jaw, skull, servo arm, and threaded rod:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four-bar_linkage

This is the same type of mechanism that makes your windshield wipers work or a strandbeest walk. Just change the length of the arms or maybe attach something to the arms, and you can produce a huge variety of different motions.

  6. GODDAMIT!! The first video in this series worked absolutely fine…….today…absolute shit. I had to refresh the page 4 times before it even started to play, and now it plays for 5 seconds and stops to forever buffer……my internet is not throttled, it happens to me both in firefox AND chrome……has anyone had this problem and fixed it?

  7. Is your flash version up to date? I’ve had issues in the past when the flash plugin is a bit out of date. Although I really wish the site used an html5 player as the player does seem a bit flaky from time to time.

  8. Yup. Chrome auto updates flash anyways. It sucks. I have gone back and watched the Printrbot Build, with the old player, and that works fine.

  9. I could be wrong, but looks like it’ll be a prick to get those servos out if you did want to change them, having the horn on the other side of the mount and all. I could be wrong though, they might just slide out. I think with the four arm horn it’d be in there permanently
