Tested Builds: ErgoDox Mechanical Keyboards, Part 5

It’s the end of the first week in this batch of builds, and Will and Norm are rushing to get those last pieces into their ErgoDox keyboards! We’re hoping to make it to a typing test, but troubleshooting broken keys means we’ll have to do some backtracking as well. It’s been a really fun kit so far, so follow along with us for the rest of this build by signing up for a Tested Premium Membership here!

  1. My baddest solder burn was after a long day for some odd reason reaching down to hold it like a pencil just above the point. The things was I couldn’t let on what i had just done… the other guys would never had let me live it down.

All I could do was calmly put the soldering iron down and nonchalantly pick up the solder sponge to hold for awhile.

Had blisters on three fingers for a good while after, but nobody was the wiser 😉

  2. Actually, Will, the much maligned Star Wars Holiday Special was all about Chewbacca’s birthday, or “Life Day” as it was called.

  3. Good Grief! Since when has “could’ve” been a contraction for “could give?” And this in the main headline, no less!!

  4. 99 problems, love it.

Would you recommend a fan or ventilation during this build? I just ordered up but am wondering if I can do this at my desk, or should take it to my brothers shop?

    Cheers!

  5. Yes, always use gloves with epoxy. Always! You can easily develop a condition against it and then you’re unable to work with epoxy. Source: Amateur boatbuilding enthusiast.

One of the things that makes me crazy about Adams build videos is that he never uses gloves with any of the noxious stuff he smears on models.

  6. My worse soldering iron burn was when i was a small child, my dad was working on something, and i was ‘helping’ passing tools, asking dumb questions and such (i was about 4 or 5), i was pretty good when working on the cars and stuff… anyways he was looking down at the board in his hands, asked me to pass the iron. so being an expert on passing stuff i figured i’d do it like i would pass a screwdriver, by offering him the handle, so i picked the iron up by the hot end.
and the rest of the evening was spent at the local accident and emergency unit 🙂

only did it the once 🙂

  7. I love watching builds like this. But have to say. I really cringes to not see sockets when using IC’s. By all means, could be that there is no room for it, but sockets is heaven when making stuff you want to thinker with.
