Tested Builds: Foam Propmaking, Part 2
Bill and Norm start their foam weapon builds by first sketching out their designs. While Bill takes on making an axe, Norm goes with a sword. Scale is important in this first step! (Follow along the rest of the week by joining the Tested Premium member community!)

Wonderful second episode to this week of builds. Question for Bill. Will a foam prop hold up to the rigors of the casting process if you wanted to make a resin cast at a later date?
Personally, if I’m going to make a mold of something, I would make the master from something more rigid. Something like hard plastics or clay that I can get a finer amount of detail into. That being said, technically you can make a mold from a foam prop. If it’s built properly it should survive the molding process.
awesome stuff cant wait for tomorrow.
Bill, Punished Props is a GREAT name: it’s all about the weathering and realism.
Thanks!
Ha! Ok I’ll keep it. =)
As a costumer I came across Bills stuff a few years ago and love his FoamSmith books! Highly recommend them for anyone who wants to start foam stuff.
We do Blizzcon every year! I built the Kel’thuzad in 2015 and the male Witchdoctor in 2014 🙂 KT was a very foam heavy build since it was so big, thermoplastic was not going to work (too much weight).
Cant wait to see what Bill comes up with!
Guys, could you please add a volume slider to your player? Just on /off is pretty weak.
Good to see Bill going into all the detail and techniques, Now we need a Norm, Bill, Frank and Evil ted episode! It would be overload
Great video, can’t wait to see the rest.
The low resolution is pretty disappointing as a new member though.
Great video. Looking forward to the rest of these videos in this series. Well done guys.
Brian
Such an awesome tutorial series, Bill you’re such an incredible prop maker/cospalyer! So nice that the comments aren’t filled with trolls and haters too!
Just a heads up, Starbucks is named after the Character “Starbuck” from Moby-Dick.
Not sure about Red Hook, but just thought I’d mention that about Starbucks. Great video! Very informative.
If you’re not too stingy with the latex you could mold an original that your super happy with. might make sense for archiving as latex doesn’t store too well.
Please don’t put a metal rod in a latex foam condom and hope you can swing it around without it eventually spearing some guy in the eye.
Do you guys have a particular type of foam you like to work with? Or its just whatever is around a good option?
