Tested Builds: Foam Propmaking, Part 4

The blade forms for our foam weapons are coming along nicely, and today we start adding some detail to the builds. Bill shows us how to made the foam look like battered metal, in preparation for painting, weathering, and finishing. (Watch Bill and Norm finish up their foam builds tomorrow by joining the Tested Premium member community!)

  1. I’m still having a ton of issues with the video. It’ll freeze up while the sound keeps going, then it’ll restart where it was, so it gets more and more out of sync.

  2. I am curious why the decision of utilizing latex to seal your foam. Thoughts on resin, PVA glue or smooth on (which I believe is a type of resin) or plastic dip. Thoughts Bill?

    Brian

I apologize if you went over this in this episode. I was typing this before I watched the video.

  3. So these box cutters… Aren’t the blades so long as they are segmented and designed to snap off in sections when the blade dulls?.. Or is it just me?

  4. From what i can tell you are right. these are the box cutter blades that are segmented and it made me a bit uneasy to watch them use them fully extended… I had a bad accident with one like that because I had it extended too far and it snapped off (as it’s designed to do)

I personally never extend them past the one segment anymore… too scary. I guess with soft foam its less likely but I think getting a different tool with a solid (resharpen-able) blade would be much better.

There is quite a lack of PPE in these videos XD

  5. Can you tell me what model Dremmel you guys were using in the video? It looked like it had an adjustable speed on it.

  6. Some bad corruption still around 6-7 minutes – video corrupted and got out of sync until restarted a couple times there.

  7. i’ve built quite a few boffers in my day using box cutters just like the one he’s using and I’ve never had a problem with them “snapping” unintentionally. You want to be careful with the amount of deflection you put on the blade of course, but again I’ve never had any problems, even when I ran them a dull as a rock cause I didn’t think about buying a sharpening/honing thing.

  8. he said in the first video that he uses those longer blades so he can cut through thicker foam, and he continually sharpens them because foam dulls the blades extremely fast.

  9. wood burner or eletronic solder (for putting togheter eletronics) wich one? (i already have the eletronic one) sorry for my bad english and thank you for the good contents

  10. it’s a little late to answer I suppose, but It’s more akin to a wood burner. I’m guessing his is one with variable heat.
