Great stuff, I always have a bit of a mixed feeling when things are touristed-up(?). Cozy ship, people “taking over” remote villages with camera’s and such. Somehow it doesn’t feel like it fits, the harsh reality of those living there and the tourists. But, on the other hand, still wouldn’t say no to having a bit of luxury on such a trip. 🙂
Also, please make the drone footage available on Youtube in HD, that would be so awesome!

At a bizarre arcade I once found in the Italian Alps (long story), I once found an air hockey table that had curvature to it, allowing you to send curved shots for increased difficulty. I imagine playing ping-pong in rough seas is like setting difficulty to MAXIMUM

Is This Only a Test?
First of: long time fan of the site and the podcasts!
That being said, forgive me for my unfiltered feedback on this series:
Norm, on the podcast I loved all the incredible stories you were telling. However, these videos are extremely late and underwhelming. In my opinion you should rebrand this “Premium” content as RAW or UNCUT.
One man crew Ben Brown works a lot harder to achieve good quality content and his videos are not even behind a paywall. These videos feel like quickly produced teasers to me instead of actual quality content.
I guess we are spoiled by the quality vloggers are reaching these days without any crew. Being on a ship with one of these guys, I would be inspired to actually work harder and get more shots and stories instead of doing a one shot GoPro-coffee-in-hand-walkaround with no lavalier microphone. Look at the location you’re at! With a captain of the ISS! I understand you were not there to vlog the entire trip but it does put the amount of effort of the Tested crew in sharp contrast with present day Youtubers.
I guess if we can learn something from the Ben Browns and Casey Neistats: work harder and learn quicker by doing so. (Norm’s photography work proves this) So put down that coffee, get your camera wet and drone off the ship. Time to step it up guys!
I hope you realized this after day 5 and the next videos will prove me incredibly wrong.

These videos are great I just wish they were 20 minutes each.
Seeing Norm again is like being reunited with an old friend
You can’t really compare these videos, which are indeed raw/uncut extras (pretty sure the main vids from the trip are coming up later), to Ben’s vlogs which are his main output from his experience on the ship.
Ben has been spending the last three-four years shooting his daily life in an interesting way, Norm has spent the last six or seven years making concise pieces of structured, themed reporting/journalism. If he was vlogging on Ben or Casey’s level five days into this trip, he’d be pulling ten millions subs and headlining vidcon by next summer 😉
BTW. Norm, I’m very impressed by how you seem to know your way around the ship so well in so few days! I’ve spent my fair share of time onboard large ships, and I am terrible at getting my bearings around them.
….. always better to have the audience wanting more. I think that all of them are awesome.
My quess is that more shall be revealed, perhaps at the next Still Untitled Podcast.
Meanwhile, try watching them with a cup of coffee and a shot of Bailey’s (though my preference is Jameson, straight, no sugar, no whip cream).
i think that’s a totally fair criticism, and you’re right: these are “raw” behind the scenes videos that we filmed throughout the trip in addition to the projects we had on our schedule to produce for YouTube (which I’m really excited about). Our Premium Member videos have always been about giving the Tested community extra content beyond what we produce for the wider audience, but you’re also right that it can create confusion when the label of Premium creates an expectation of quality. We’re actually in the process of addressing that right now in our content planning for the next year, but it’s something that won’t be reflected in the context of the videos we shot for this trip.
In fact, it was our time spent and exposure to the working processes of extremely talented producers like Ben Brown and Tom Scott on this trip that’s changed how we are thinking about production. I spoke a little about that in the most recent episode of This is Only a Test. Those guys (as well as the other Generator Arctic crew) are amazingly talented and have an incredible work ethic–watching them work was inspirational and a much needed kick in the pants to get us thinking about how was can best make content going forward.
I think tested premium content are uncut videos that only a subset of tested viewers find interesting which otherwise be boring or appear unprofessional to public eyes. Its our backstage pass to the tested concert.
Please dump more of these and longer! The ship is one huge gear to geek out on.
I have always understood the Premium videos are the DVD Extras of Tested, but a boost in quality across the board will never be a bad idea.
I love this video, it really adds the right level of context. Great stuff.
That’s an awesome response from Norm right there, always learning and improving how to navigate the difficult line of pleasing the premium members and content.
Btw, though I’m not a fan of first person vlogging, that’s some awesome footage as well from Ben!

You can’t compare Tested and vlogger. They do two different things for two different audiences. Not a fair comparison at all. Be happy that we get to experience the trip from multiple POVs.
LOL the bass on of the engines was so loud on this video I had to turn down my sub 🙂

Only one bed? Who got the floor?
There’s a sofa that gets converted into a bed at night (from what I’ve seen in other shots, it kind of flattens out like a futon-sofa-bed thingy). And they run such a nice hotel there, that the service staff do the converting while you’re out at dinner.
I was pretty sure there was a second place to sleep, but didn’t see an upper bunk like on a train, and the cabin wasn’t all that large.
I personally am really digging these videos. You don’t need to “Neistat” these videos.
