Simone Giertz’s Shoulder Brushing Hands–It Might Work!
Simone’s newest robot build is one specifically made for an upcoming event–the annual Shorty awards in New York City. Since she’s nominated for an award, Simone plans on attending with a robot that helps brush her shoulder–like it’s no big deal. But designing the arm and hand to move the way she wants is no easy feat!

That’s a really nice Not-so-shitty-robot. If you wan to play around with ideas. consider running the wrist waving motion with a 4-bar linkage. That would avoid having the second servo motor. figure out the linkages and you could run it off a simple stepper motor to make sure it always stops in the same place.
Here’s a video of a procedural method of calculating 4 bar linkages to simulate natural motion that the guys at Disney Research in Switzerland came up with a few years ago.

I agree that if you got some more fabric similar to the blazers and made a little sleeve it would look really fantastic, or really creepy. Very cool project.

Wasn’t she saying that she wanted to laser-cut the 1/4″ plywood mounting plate to fit in the pocket, not the holes for the cables through to the inner-pocket themselves, at least that was my interpretation and what was shown. 🙂

This is the kind of wearable I can get behind.
The brushing movement at the end was really smooth. Having the arm coming out of the pocket and ‘dressed’ in a suit sleeve would be a great effect.
Simone, for something like this you might want to look into replacing the big Arduino with maybe a small ESP8266? Or even the ESP8266 Huzzah Breakout Board from Adafruit. Would be much lighter 😉

You should just put some counterweights in the pockets on the other side. It would make the jacket heavier, but at least it would sit more evenly on you shoulders, instead of being pulled down on one side.
Love the motion you managed to get out of that, Simone. it’s actually pretty fluid and semi-natural looking!

My Queen! Wonderful and exactly what everyone should have on such occasions! I hope you rush “This Is A Thing!” to a readily available MP3 format player somewhere.
The end result is really, really nice. What you need to do, if I may suggest, My Queen, is go to a tailor and have some shaping and padding installed. Not that your fabulous body needs it! Hardly; the suit will fit and hang better. The finished motion is perfect. After seeing the evolution– which I believe you left a couple of steps out of near the end — that casual brush is perfect. Maybe a softer hand?

Maybe consider using smaller servos, pretty sure a micro servo would be more than adequate and would save weight and make the construction that much daintier. Also I think the robot arm needs its own sleeve, its going to the award show too, it should dress up 🙂

I would consider a micro servo for the secondary one. Put a little less mass out on the end of the arm, plus the hinge wouldn’t be as bulky.
