About the oddly placed Tan 1×1 technic brick…
My guess is that it is for reduction of different components. the set uses 3 of that piece. 2 are specifically needed, with the hole, for functionality. Rather than include those 2 AND also a single plain 1×1 tan brick, perhaps it was just easier to include 3 of a single type.
Taj Mahal just beat out the Millenuim Falcon on piece count.
That sounds totally reasonable.
