Let’s Build: Kiki’s Delivery Service Papercraft, Part 1

This week’s build is a return to one of our favorite types of model kits: papercraft models from the company Sankei. Sean and special guest Danica join to put together a beautiful cottage from the Studio Ghibli film Kiki’s Delivery Service!

  1. Blood, Sweat & Tears. I love these Sankei builds! I hope to see some more builds from Sankei in the future (wink wink)

  2. Cool. I’ve been catching all the Studio Ghibli stuff in theater this year as the GKids Fathom event is showing all of the Miyazaki films. Next week is Castle in the Sky! We saw Kiki a few weeks ago. Love this film!

  3. Soft “G” in Ghibli, and I agree with Danica… Kiki is not my favorite. But this model is amazing. You guys may cost me >$500 because I saw the Spirited Away Bath House. Oh my god!

  4. Yep! It’s supposed to be a hard G, but apparently Miyazaki always felt it sounded better with the soft G. I can’t find the interview, but I remember him saying something about it sounding more childlike and in the end it was his company so he could call it what he wanted

  5. Oh jeez, I just looked at the Spirited Away stuff. They’re all the same scale, which I guess is also N gauge model train scale? So now I’m wondering if I’ve accidentally become a model train person who is going to have a Spirited away world in my basement… I could probably find an Audi Quatro papercraft that small too.

  6. Good to hear I’m not the only one who suddenly wanted a giant diorama in my basement. I mean, you have to add the train at that point! And for Ghibli, I don’t know exactly where I heard the soft G originally, but I lived in Japan for 3 years and it was simply unquestioned. I’d love to track down that Miyazaki comment, though!

  7. Ghibli films do tend to end seemingly abruptly.

Kiki is definitely one of my favourites, although it’s very hard to decide between most of them for me.
