Let’s Build: Multi-Material 3D Printing, Part 3

The intricate wirework for the Prusa i3 multi-material upgrade is both beautiful and maddening. It looks like mad science, but we’re getting close to being able to print with the new extruder system!

  1. I just temporarily fixed my printer last night with zip ties! I had to replace the entire hot end assembly (Broken Stock Hotend…might as well upgrade..). Needed to print the carriage to fit the new assembly. A zip tie saved me!

  2. I built and have been using an i3 Mk2 for about six months, this MMU upgrade looks so fragile to use on top of that. I’m interested in seeing how reliable you find it. If you’re doing a final video I think that would be interesting to hear your opinions after a few weeks of use. Maybe a short retrospective later?

  3. Jeremy did a bunch of successful prints, other than adjusting the tension on the extruders we didn’t have any problems.

  4. That’s one of those things I like less about 3D printed kits. For 750 Dollars, some of the more crticical parts might be a bit tougher. Also having to drill out holes and such… meh. I’m worried I will built the kit, destroy something from which I learned, but then having to wait for replacements again.

  5. A little note about the Bondtech gears: best if you put the stepper motor one on before you attach the motor to the Extruder carriage. Not like what Shawn (Sean?) is doing.

  6. I just watched the video put up yesterday of Jeremy and Sean discussing the prints. Really interesting observations about the wipe tower wall thickness and material swaps.

I did want to ask if the “Tested” logo shown in the video was avaialble as an STL (couldn’t find in Thingiverse).
