Totally Unauthorized Commentary: Blade Runner (1981)

Adam, Simone, and Blade Runner superfan Mark Dubeau prepare themselves for the upcoming Blade Runner 2049 release by rewatching the original Blade Runner! Watch along the final cut of this sci-fi classic–it’ll be Simone’s first viewing of the film!

  1. It has been suggested, as Simone asked, that Blade Runner and the Alien movies ARE INDEED in the same universe. In a shot in Blade Runner 2049, when visiting Wallace in his office, that an “engineer” (Promethius) can be seen in one of the glass boxes. (not sure how this ties in)

  2. i believe that was a nexus 8, according to the label, evoking sapper.

but yes, in bonus materials for prometheus, there is reference to tyrell corp. but not sure if that is canon.

  3. and I do NOT believe that Deckard is a replicant! The eye thing means nothing, its just a form of red-eye. Also, if he was, why would he have such a hard time fighting the other replicants if he was one?

  4. Really enjoying the unauthorized commentaries. Keep them coming. It helps that you’ve covered some of my favourite films recently!

  5. Turtles have flippers, tortoises have feet with toes and claws. Turtles primarily live in water except when laying their eggs, tortoises sometimes live exclusively on land (eg giant tortoises on Galapagos) but other tortoises can live mostly in the water (eg snake necked tortoises which live in water and only go on land to cross it to get from one body of water to another, like they can follow damp ground to find a dam or billabong)

  6. Weil that was fun. After 2049 I see a lot of people saying it’s better than the original and I could understand why, but all it takes is to watch it again to see that Blade Runner is a straight up masterpiece. Loved hearing all the interpretations of scenes to support the Deckard as replicant theory – they are mostly so ambiguous so they could be made to fit any theory of course! I like to think there was a real Deckard who either was killed or did in fact retire, so the police got Tyrell to supply a replicant ‘blade runner’ (to help clean up their mess) and implanted the real Deckard’s memories.

  7. Anyone remember the TV show with Joanna Cassidy and Andy Griffith?

it was a sort of “science fiction” show. Andy Griffith runs a junk yard I think? I think he is like broke or something. I think Joana Cassidy works with him or something. Some how they either invent or find or a friend invents some sort of amazing new rocket fuel that’s cheap and easy to make and super powerful. They decide to build a space ship and go to the moon to collect stuff to sell. I am basing this totally on memory from the late 80s or 90s (too lazy right now to google it).

I loved that show. It only lasted one season? Or less? Also it’s impossible to find it on DVD or streaming anywhere. Something to do with licensing or copyright and it would cost too much to do and wouldn’t sell.

  8. Really enjoying this series. Please continue to post these! I would really like to see one for maybe something like Raiders or maybe even a film Adam doesn’t like – so we could get his perspective on something different. I know BTTF has been mentioned as a film Adam doesn’t enjoy.

  9. Poor Simone is completely blindsided… She shoulda been allowed to see the movie first without the commentary from the boys… 🙂

  10. This is great fun to watch. As for the Deckard replicant issue, I think it makes a whole lot more storytelling sense that he’s human. If some of the main themes of the film involve both “the other” and the questioning about what makes a human, human; then those scenes that show how Deckard and replicants have similar experiences are there to reinforce those themes. Making pretty much every main character a replicant kind of defeats that purpose. Or at least significantly dilutes it.

Of course, it’s obvious by now that they’ve purposely made the issue murky because it makes for a better experience/mystery/discussion.

  11. Joana Cassidy actually came back and did the stunts crashing through the glass the next time around. They totally rebuilt the set for the Kill Scene when she is shot down for this Final Cut Edition. They also corrected some if not all of the fire flares in the city scape fly over digitally. Another thing they mention is that the Unicorn scene was shot during production on the movie set of Legend, Ridley knew he wanted to add the scene to Blade Runner at some point in time. The glow on the eyes was achieved using a metallic coated contact lens. They are apparently very dangerous to wear so they limited the use.

  12. When Roy lets go of the dove, when it flies up into the sky they added a digital painting of the evening city sky line in place of the daylight dawn blue sky from the original.

  13. Nice to see people enjoying commenting during a movie. Most people will give you the look lol.
