Adam Savage’s Mercury Spacesuit Replica
A double dose of space awesomeness! Adam shares with us two prized possessions: a perfect replica of the coveted NASA-issued blue flight jacket worn by Apollo astronauts, and a recreated silver full-body pressure suit used in NASA’s Mercury missions. Yep, it’s the iconic U.S. Navy Mark IV suit designed by B.F. Goodrich Company and worn by astronauts like John Glenn. Watch the unedited suit test here!

New favourite cave-vid? I think so.
This was simply fantastic, Guys!!
I am going to have to watch this a couple of times in order to absorb this angle of Adam’s cave. As well as his new jacket and ultra-cool space suit… 🙂
.
This is the watch that I was referring to in the other video. 😉 It’s definitely not his Omega Seamaster..
Of all the things Adam has built himself or had someone build for him, this is up there with the Rasputin glove from Hellboy and his R2D2.
By the way, could you guys show his R2D2? It isn’t complete yet, right?
Haha, I figured as soon as he put it on, a light went on “oh, *that* is what it is” 🙂
Space history has always been my obsession and the Mercury suit has always been my favorite, my jealousy knows no bounds today, Mr. Savage.
The only thing this video is missing is a slow motion shot of Adam walking down a hallway toward camera. So great. Congrats, Adam!
Just to be clear, I am referring to the watch that he is wearing before he puts on the spacesuit. The one with the white dial, and what looks like a moonphase at the six o’clock position. This is the one that I would like to know what brand it is? 😉
The other watch (shown in the video) is clearly an Omega Speedmaster..
Ah, I see. Wasn’t Norm talking about getting a wristwatch recently, maybe they need to do a watchcast episode of Still Untitled. 🙂
First off the video is awesome thanks guys. I’m sorry but I don’t seem to see the link to the jacket. I would love to know where to find one!!!!!
I did some googling, it seems there isn’t a website yet, but according to http://www.space.com/23826-apollo-astronaut-flight-jacket-replica.html you can apparently email info
Apparently it costs 450 pounds, so about $745.
Never mind, I did some digging and found it!!!!

I also did some quick digging and found it but thanks for the reply!!!
The Speedmaster is a chronograph, not chronometer. Chronometer is a well-regulated accurate watch, a chronograph has the stopwatch built in.
Yeah, he has been talking about a potential watch from Apple, and that is why he is wearing a watch now (a basic white dial Timex.) That way he would be used to wearing a watch if (and when) Apple does come out with a smart watch of their own. 😉
I doubt they would do a watchcast as Will is not into wearing watches… 🙁
I noticed the extra-long NASA-spec velcro watchband – probably more Apollo-accurate than Mercury, but that’s picky. There’s an awesome picture of Buzz Aldrin in the Apollo 11 capsule putting his aviators into his sleeve pocket like a badass, with the long strap wrapped twice around his wrist. Someday I’ll get the long NASA band and wear it that way around town. Like a badass.
What an awesome suit! I’m a particular fan of all the metal fittings. As for that unknown connector on the helmet, according to Wiki – “A small pressure bottle connected by a small hose to a connector next to the astronaut’s left jaw was used to pressurize a pneumatic seal when the faceplate was closed.”
06:38 – Oh, I read about this once. The helmet tiedown cables are there because, well, see all that slack in the neck area, below the helmet ring? (You get a good feel for how much there is later on, when Adam’s getting into the suit.) If the suit suddenly pressurized and the ring wasn’t held down by something, that part of the suit would blow up like one of those Martian Popping Thing squeeze toys. The wearer would end up with the helmet ring riding somewhere up above eye level and the helmet waving around uselessly above his head. Not only is it hard to see when your spacesuit does that, it’s difficult to breathe with the neck seal being dragged up onto your face (and that’s if the lower part of the helmet didn’t jam into your jaw or nose on the way past and cause even bigger problems). It’d be a bad day at the office all the way around.
Awesome costume, & very cool insight into having it made!! Just looking on the inter-web, looking for pic’s of the real deal, to do some comparisons… & low & behold I found these are now being made CUSTOM ORDER on ebay for a starting bid of just under 5K… minus the Helmet, & a few other bits. Cool, YES… 5k cool? PS they R using Adam as their model, is the same costumer that made his making these? Either way very cool, & would love to own one… just too much ca$h for me!!
Norm also mentioned these I think https://vimeo.com/72087677 though I don’t know if he bought one 🙂
The one on eBay is made by the same person, yes. I saw one of the auctions a couple of months ago and there was a note from Adam and a mirror-selfie of him wearing his suit 🙂
Awesome video, I couldn’t stop smiling while watching it.
Near the end of the video I couldn’t help noticing the signs on the door, the top one, was that the Nebuchadnezzar builder plaque prop from the Matrix?
Yeah, you are right. I totally forgot about those watches that are made in Detroit..
I wonder, of all the costumes Adam owns, is that blue jacket from the Empire Strikes Back that the crew used in Norway among them?
This video is great and fun to watch. When I can afford it I want to grab the Premium Sub so I can watch how Adam put the suit on! Keep up the awesome content. Thanks Will, Norm, Adam, & Joey!
Is anyone else interested in what those two jewel encrusted skulls are from!?
My bad! I missed have mistaken what you said on this subject in a recent podcast..
It’s good to know that you are a fellow watch lover.. 😉
The Mercury suits are among my favorites of the various space suits. What a well-done replica. I’m also DELIGHTED to see that Adam has one of the replica Nebuchadnezzar plaques that I made, so prominently visible in the background on the door.
For people who want real space history stuff. A auction soon at http://www.bonhams.com/auctions/21425/

Great video, except one thing: Where the *#(@ did you get the helmet? No mention of that except that it might have been fiberglass and that it was a replica. Googling “Mercury Mark 4 helmet replica” returns photos of his helmet, but no supplier.
When I was a kid I was offered the chance to get a beat up old Gemini suit from a NASA space suit lab, but was way to shy to follow that up. Oh well.
Did Adam make his dream purchase?
