Inside Adam Savage’s Cave: Master and Commander

Adam Savage shows off his Master and Commander costume inspired by his love for the Peter Weir film. And of all the many components to the costume, one unique piece was actually acquired through a fantastic stroke of luck.

  1. With Adam’s hairstyle, he does looks like an old-timey captain, I think he might want to get a less modern pair of glasses for his “hero-poses” though =)

  2. How much cool shit can one man possibly have! Seriously Adam you are a boss nerd and I mean that with the utmost respect.

  3. Great great movie.

Indeed it is! One of the fery vew movies out there that SHOULD have launched a Franchise and didn’t. As opposed to the boadtloads of crappy movies that do get sequels…

And there qould have been so much material! 21 books… which are awsome in itself by the way.

Great Costume Mr Savage, but I miss the Tricorne! Worn athwartships like Jack Aubrey in honour of Lord Nelson and the old ways.

  4. Awesome! I love seeing all the effort Adam puts into this stuff, except Jack Aubrey did wear his hat “Napoleon-style” in honor of Nelson, and I believe the shirt collar is probably inaccurate. Picky, picky. 🙂

  5. I think historically it’s actually the other way round. The British Navy was wearing their cocked hats athwartships since before Napoleons rise. During the Napoleonic wars the custom changed to fore and aft. Maybe to get distance from the L’Empereur.

But in the books it is mentioned a few times that Jack Aubrey hung unto the athwartship custom in honour of Lord Nelson, his personal hero.

So please Adam, wear yours like a good Tory 😉 Athwartship like Nelson.

  6. I love the movie but was disappointed when I learned that the producers changed the enemy from american (in the book), to french (in the movie). Apparently they thought that it might offend american audiences, which of course would have certainly happened due to our conceited nature.

  7. Master & Commander is actually one of my favourite movies aswell. Tried to analyze if it was because of Russel, Paul, or Peter… But I think it’s the perfect symbiosis.

One name beyond Peter, Paul and Mary… Puff the magic Dragon, foverer!

  9. I went to the movies with a girl to see Matrix Revolutions as a thank you for her helping me out a few months earlier in preparing for a study abroad class in England. This was opening day of Master and Commander and when we got to the theater we opted to see Master and Commander instead. Seeing this movie instead is not a regret I have from that night. Great movie that instantly became one of my favorites.

  10. Tricky, it seems to me that Adam is more after the look of the film, than historical accuracy. And as with most films, when you go into details this becomes contradictory.

  11. One of the things that I liked so much about ‘Master and Commander’ though, is that they got so many of the historical details right. I brought up that particular Brian Lavery book because Peter Weir used it as the primary reference work, and Lavery himself was a historical consultant for the film.

  12. Well if this is a full dress uniform, than it’s one that has been to the far side of the world an back. This would never do to appear on a flagship.

  13. If you love the movie, read the books! They are amazing. And as other’s here has stated, Jack Aubrey wore his bicorn “amidships” (with the points over the shoulder) rather than fore-and-aft (point of the hat in front and in back of the wearer.) In the books Aubrey is a HUGE fan-boy for Nelson. Nelson wore his amidships, and at the time of the movie, wearing it amidships was considered old-fashion and Aubrey is sometimes considered by his peers as being a bit old-fashion himself. While wearing it fore-and-aft was the newer style. It had nothing to do with Napoleon.

Also, having two epaulettes makes him a post captain and not a master and commander.

Am I the only one who could see Adam more as Maturin and Jamie as Aubrey?
