Animating Robocop 2’s Cain Robot with Phil Tippett

One of science fiction film’s most memorable and menacing creatures is the Cain cyborg from Robocop 2. Cain was brought to life with a full-size robot prop and several intricately machined stop-motion puppets, all which have survived and live at Tippett Studio. We get up close with these iconic props and chat with legendary special effects animator Phil Tippett about the process of designing and animating Cain.

  1. Holy Crappin’ Yowza! My mind is blown!!

Thanks for bringing us this wonderful interview with Phil Tippett,

  2. Where did the parts for the life sized prop come from? They couldn’t have built it all from scratch. I mean, they could, but probably didn’t. 😛

  3. Awesome interview!

Whenever I see him, I think he’s an old Philip Seymour Hoffman. There’s an alternate universe where Mr. Hoffman is still alive and he plays the lead in a biopic of Mr. Tippett 25 years from now.

  4. Was that the one where Robocop ran on Windows and the evil robot ran on Mac OS? It might have been “Robocop 3”

  5. Way to go Tested on a great video piece. I love Phil Tippett’s work. Cain was not one of my favorite constructs, too top heavy to be practical, it certainly has an animal quality. In a recent video Adam brushed past a CAIN model kit in his attic, just coincidence?

  6. Phil doesn’t seem like he would be the funnest of people to work for..

But then again, I could be wrong.

  7. It is a taxing job to manage a team in a creative and time-crunched industry, in my experience it seems as if the people who get really good at it are the silent and firm types, look at Jamie for another special effects example.

  8. Phil always seems so grumpy. Except for when he’s talking about his work. Great video!

His behavior on camera has a lot common with Jamie. (Especially his early days on Mythbusters.)

Great video as usual. Keep it up!
