  1. Great to see all those wonderful models. I had ALL of the original Aurora models (Flying Sub, Seaview, Spindrift, Orion, et all) so it was great to see someone is making model of these wonderful ships again. The Proteus was especially nice. However, I wish Norm had talked more about the models themselves and how rare they were rather than how they were made. A nice piece, though.

  2. Do you generally get what you pay for when you’re buying models?

Depends on the manufacturer, the Japanese ones are generally very good, like Tamiya and Hasegawa, they have mostly military aircraft/vehicles, Hasegawa has some Sci-Fi stuff as well. Another Japanese one that is extremely good is Finemolds, they do amazing Star Wars kits that almost fall together. I did one of they Y-Wing kits and it remains one of the most impressive kits I’ve built.

Revell Germany and Airfix are now much better than they used to be, if you are looking at those look for some of the newer releases/new toolings.

Moebius ones are quite nice as well (as you can see in the video). Another one with good Sci-Fi subjects is Polar Lights/Round 2, they do some very nice Star Trek kits.

  3. When he said “I could talk for days on that end of it” my first thought is “Yes!”. Very fond memories of binging on internet text posts about the history of the Kenner Star Wars model process in the 70s/80s. . .

  4. However, I wish Norm had talked more about the models themselves and how rare they were rather than how they were made. A nice piece, though.

Sorry I don’t understand “how rare they were”. Moebius Models is a currently active company, I think all the kits shown are either in production or coming soon.

The kits Aaron Douglas built with Adam on the latest One Day Builds were Moebius kits.

  5. Great models – love the Ranger! I was wondering where the models Aaron Douglas assembled came from and figured they’d be ridiculously expensive, but I’m happy to see they’re not… I just might pick one of those up.

I shall explain. Although “Moebius Models” is a currently active company, many of these models – such as the Flying Sub, Seaview, Proteus (and I expect others we did not see) were originally produced in the 1960s and 1970s by Aurora. These are HIGHLY sought after and very expensive. Being as new — and from the look of it very well-executed — models are being made of these, I feel this element of their model line should have been at least mentioned.

  7. Actually, Moebius and to a large extent Level 2 are using the same die/tooling as the former modeling companies. Moebius I believe has the Aurora and and some Playing Mantis tooling and Level 2 has Lindberg (talk about rare!), AMT, MPC, and Polar Lights (which includes some Aurora tooling). Level 2 also develops their own tooling – and with that Interstellar Ship, I guess Moebius is also.

Unfortunately, most modelers these days are older and into Military kits – so I am told that neither company can re-issue everything they have.

See, that’s what I’m talking about. That’s what I wanted to hear in the video.

    Thanks.
