  1. I enjoyed your favorite things. Being a bit of a tool-sl*t myself (I apologize for my off off-color shoptalk) I have to say my favorite thing of this year was my Makita track saw.

I’d seen the YouTubers with their $1K Festool track saws and shook my head. This year I began converting a van into an RV and decided to take the plunge on a track saw. Makita is more to my liking and it was less than half the price of the Festool (IIRC).

Wow, what a game changer. I use it all the time. I use it as a sort of “plunge saw” to cut areas out of the center of a large plywood surface. I use it to break down larger sheets of plywood. I use it for crosscutting plywood when a piece is too large for my crosscut sled on the table saw….

Love the tools “favorite things” — everything else is just hoarding. 😃

  2. The Makita track saw offering is just about as underpowered as Festool’s, unfortunately. The Mafell/Bosch 55mm equivalent can deliver glue-ready rips in 8/4 purpleheart all day without tripping its thermal overload and the tracks are much more versatile with multiple clamping points and much easier joining to create custom lengths in seconds. There’s also a special “Aerofix” track that “clamps” via vacuum so you don’t have to ever mess around with any clamps at all so long as you’ve got a relatively smooth surface underneath.
