This is Only a Test 135 – The Filet o’ Fish Incident – 8/16/2012
On this week’s show, Joey is curious about Windows 8, Will enjoys the heat, and Norm tells a horrifying story. All that, plus Windows 8 RTM impressions, a Mars Curiosity update, Samsung’s Galaxy Note 10.1, and another edition of fake outtakes. Enjoy!

Was just wondering when it would go up!
seems like a solid bunch of topics this week
It would have been impossible for Microsoft to introduce the Metro stuff with Windows 7. The Start screen doesn’t interact with the desktop at all in Windows 8 for security reasons. Microsoft has been pretty clear on that. WinNT is a cluster fuck as far as security is concerned.
They could have tried launching just WinRT tablets and WP8 and left Metro out of Windows 8. But then who the fuck would use a Windows tablet? Since Apple already has a choke hold on the market adoption rate would have been way too slow for Microsoft.
Microsoft is making this move now because a couple versions of Windows down the line WinNT will no longer exist. WinRT will be the only kernel. Windows 8 is the beginning of the only way we’re going to (finally?) get a new Windows.
I’m not saying Windows 8 is perfect. I’m simply saying that some of the things introduced in Windows 8 is what’s going to make “the future of computing” better. Just like how underlying changes with Windows Vista gave us the great desktop we have now in Windows 8.
PS – You can’t move from the Windows 8 RTM download to the commercial version in October because the 90 day trial version is Enterprise. Only Core and Pro are available to the average Joe.
Expeariments…
Guys.
You both did horrible things.
Kyle Reese already mentioned the T-600 in the very first Terminator movie:
“The 600 series had rubber skin. We spotted them easy, but these are new. They look human – sweat, bad breath, everything.”

Official Challenge for Norm: I want to see if you can make it through an entire podcast without fiddling with your tablets and phones on the table. Terms of challenge are that you have to have them on the table in front of you, but you’re not allowed to touch them.
D
I hadn’t heard about the dolphin footage until listening to the podcast this morning and went to look it up. Is it just me, or did it look incredibly fake? Not that it is, I think it might be one of those cases where video compression makes something look like CGI.
I still don’t get Will’s argument against the whole task switcher thing on windows 8. Grouping is a fundamental element of organisation. I don’t want my metro apps getting messed up with all my desktop applications, you’ve got to think of metro as a support device to the primary interface (the desktop). I don’t believe it’s as difficult to switch between the two as Will makes it sound.
Nice update though Will, good to hear Windows 8 is looking pretty good. I’m loving Windows 8. First day buy for me on my brand new system. So excited!
The fact that “water weight” has come into common usage is proof that we have completely lost the thread when it comes to health and size.
Throwing it out there right now:
