This Is Only A Test 124 – Brought to You By Starbucks – 5/31/2012

On this week’s episode, Gary shares medical terminology, Norm is ambivalent about the Beatles, and Will peels a banana. All that, plus Windows 8 Release Preview, Facebook, RIM, Space X, and a whole lot more. Enjoy!

  1. Ahhh, Gary… there is nothing polarising about Windows Metro, it is universally accepted as being shit. It might be useable on a tablet, but it’s still terrible. What bugs me is none of the so called critics are willing to call it as it is.

  2. Will doesn’t like prog? That’s disappointing. Although admittedly, I never got into Rush either. I like it when I hear them on the radio, I just don’t go out of my way to buy their stuff.

My own musical tastes have evolved wildly as I grew up. I went through a classical (more specifically, romantic era symphony) phase, grunge phase, rap phase, loud phase (metal, rap and whatever else I could use to try to burn out my car stereo), and now I’m into prog rock and power metal. Liquid Tension Experiment and Dream Theater comprise some of the best sheer musicianship I’ve witnessed outside of classical music.

Oh and Reggie Watts is amazing.

    Just thought I’d share.

Also, I used to work at TGI Friday’s . I even unloaded the shipments in the mornings. It was then that I realized that the same stinkin’ truck would go to Friday’s, Applebee’s, Chili’s, and I think I saw one a Ruby Tuesday’s as well. Performance Food Group, IIRC.

  3. I think between Giantbomb and Tested I am fully versed in American chain restaurants. Seems to be popular thing to discuss. It’s a bit baffling to me and it comes up at lot.

  4. Party Tip: A good banana will just snap in half, leaving both sides easy to peel. It’s also really satisfying.

  5. I think it must be, you get “Boiled Eggs”, “Fried Eggs”, “Poached Eggs” … where does “Eggs scrambled” come from? You also say “corned beef”, not “beef corned”. There are other examples, but quite clearly “Eggs scrambled” is nonsense!

  6. The 90’s was one of the most creative mainstream musical periods. Massive Attack, Bjork, Radiohead, Portishead, Cake, Pearl Jam, Flaming Lips, Chilli Peppers, REM, Rage Against the Machine, Beck, A Tribe Called Quest, Jurassic Five etc.

  7. Yeah, the virtuosity of the guys in Liquid Tension and Dream Theater (who are pretty much the same, I guess) is kind of crazy – even if the music can be kind of cheesy at times.

  8. Prog is sort of music written for other musicians. I don’t understand the type of person who, without any personal musical instrument playing background, can sit back and enjoy a Dream Theater album. It’s more, very difficult to play music that other musicians use as a benchmark for technical acumen and listen to to appreciate the skill of the guys who play it. I see it in a similar way to bebop style jazz. Charlie Parker and similar. You listen to that to hear a very skilled saxophonist got absolutely nuts on the instrument. It’s not easy to listen to. Not for me anyway.

  9. Uh… maybe because we enjoy good music? Millions of fans of Rush, Yes, Pink Floyd, Genesis, ELO, ELP, Triumph (okay, I’m done) across the globe would disagree with this prog rock is nonsense sentiment going on around here.

  10. Ahhh, Gary… there is nothing polarising about Windows Metro, it is universally accepted as being shit. It might be useable on a tablet, but it’s still terrible. What bugs me is none of the so called critics are willing to call it as it is.

It bothers you when people have opinions that are different than yours? That must be torturous.

Yeah, exactly — I’m willing to look past the cheesiness in favor of the variety and skill.

I’m actually not all that familiar with Rush but perhaps it’s not a large enough sample size by which to judge all prog.

  12. What time is the banana thing at?

    2 hours and 10 mins

Also, i’ve been doing the split thing since i was like seven years old, i thought everyone knew that!

And i think peeling from the stem is the correct way, as the seed is at the end and how you would discard the peel and the seed in one motion.
