   I think your right there. When you look at the Android market it doesn’t feel like the manufactures are trying to compete with Apple and the iPhone directly. It feels like they only care about the current Android market.

   It is very much like WCW in the 90’s. They are focusing too much on the short term instead of the long term fight with Apple (WWF).

5. As someone who actually bought a Windows Phone earlier this year I don’t agree with Will that much at all. Yes it does suck that I won’t get WP8, but when I do get a WP8 when I upgrade in a couple of years I’ll be that much more excited for it and that app ecosystem will have matured. The WP experience is the best experience in my opinion (I’ve used an iPhone for an extended period of time and used Android enough to not ever want one because I found the UI too hard to figure out). The other thing is that this happens to people all the time, if anyone who actually kept the ear to the wall with the Lumia 800/900 heard anything about WP8 would have known that WP8 wasn’t going to be supported on their phone. The inability to upgrade an Android phone is rampant (most people don’t notice) and how does almost any person who got an iPhone the week or two before Apple decides to announce the next model? So if I had just gotten a Lumia 900 and heard about this I wouldn’t bat an eye because WP8 isn’t coming til the end of the year and it’ll have even less apps than I can have right now, I’ll be getting 7.8 and that’ll get me essentially the same experience as if MS didn’t decide to switch the OS kernal.

   MS did this so more apps can be developed for the phone, faster, and so WP8 could be brought up to par with the other Phone OSes. If you fell like you got burned with the Lumia 900, I doubt it’ll sting that much by the time you’re going to upgrade in 2 years because it’s a wonderful phone and a great OS.

6. The difference here is that iOS 5 on the iPhone 4 is completely functional. Even if an Android phone doesn’t officially get ICS, it can still be flashed to run the new OS and will run very well.

   As the biggest Microsoft fanboy around here even I think that current Windows Phone users are getting screwed.

   So if I had just gotten a Lumia 900 and heard about this I wouldn’t bat an eye because WP8 isn’t coming til the end of the year and it’ll have even less apps than I can have right now, I’ll be getting 7.8 and that’ll get me essentially the same experience as if MS didn’t decide to switch the OS kernal.

   Uh… no. Most/all current WP7.5 apps will be able to run on WP8. There will also be a bunch of new crazy APIs available to developers in creating apps. I highly doubt Microsoft will make something similar available for WP7.8. And overall there are deeper ties between OS, features, and apps in WP8 that will make it a different experience when compared to WP7.5.

7. Hmm weird aspect ratio, but yay anyway!

   Also I am with Gary on the Windows 7/8 discussion, and for you interested folks out there, Giantbomb made a quick look regarding the multi platform-ness of windows 8 and the new tablet. It shows some great potential with gaming, if it is made for the right type of games! I also think that the new platform could be a catalyst for making new and interesting apps, cross platform!

9. The magnetic clip on keyboard and proper pen to write with are huge breakthroughs for the Surface that I can’t wait for the other companies to iterate on. That’s the type of computer I want.

12. Holy shit I had no idea Tyler Winegarner was a fan of Tested! For people who don’t know he’s a camera and video producer at GameSpot and has been co-workers with now GiantBomb staff Jeff, Brad, Vinny, and Ryan for years. Saw him at Pax East this year with Shaun McInnis both of who are great guys.

    I gotta ask him about this next time I see him.

    Doesn’t matter that they can be flashed, it matters that they won’t have warranty coverage or support from their carrier or their phone manufacturer when they do. Big difference from iOS and Windows Phone. If something goes screwy, you have to put it back to stock or the carrier/manufacturer are going to tell you to take a hike. Most people aren’t nerds like us, they only care that their phone works, and when it doesn’t they go to the people that sold them the phone to fix it. With a flashed OS, they aren’t going to get support. Running well doesn’t matter, and everyone outside of the flashing communities isn’t going to care that it’s possible.

    And overall there are deeper ties between OS, features, and apps in WP8 that will make it a different experience when compared to WP7.5.

    So the fact that they are making those massive changes means they are screwing current customers? Changing the kernel is huge. Customers aren’t really getting screwed when they change something that huge, not to mention they are adding support for multiple-core CPUs, different screen resolutions, and things like NFC. They can’t add a lot of those features to older phones, and they can’t change the hardware. Who knows, maybe that kernel change would affect all current phones to the point where it’s not really feasible to write essentially two OS’s. It’s a massive change overall, and they are combining Window 8 and Windows Phone 8. I wouldn’t be pissed if I were a customer because you are basically changing the entire OS and what it supports hardware-wise.

14. This podcast was great, but the audio went from barely audible, to ridiculously loud. It was very frustrating to turn my iPhone all the way up to hear anything, and then get my eardrums blown out 5 seconds later.
