Hands-On with Razer Blade Stealth and Razer Core

Razer is known for unveiling far-out gaming hardware concepts at CES, but this year’s product reveal seems more practical. The Razer Blade Stealth is an Ultrabook, running an Intel Core i7 processor and integrated graphics. However, games can run on an external graphics card in the form of the Razer Core, which simply connects to the laptop over a Thunderbolt cable!

  1. That looks pretty dope!

I’d like to know if the Core part (external GPU) can work with any thunderbolt equipped laptop? Right now I have a MacBook Pro and if I could buy just the core and make it work it would be awesome.

I would think that would depend on the availability of drivers for mac. PCIE over thunderbolt isn’t a new concept, or something new support wise.

  3. I like the idea but I saw on the Razer Website that the Ultrabook only has 8GB of RAM. You can not upgrade it. It is not futureproof to me 🙁

  4.   they said off camera that the Core would theoretically work with other thunderbolt 3 laptops with drivers and bios updates.

  5.   that and the fact that intels mobile chips are dual-core. VR and next gen games will need quad core for best performance.

  6. Also, I was unimpressed with the screen quality of the base model. That big bezel is pretty unsightly–definitely no dell xps 13.

  7. To call it a gaming laptop that only works if you buy the additional Core part doesn’t really make sense.

“Oh yeah this is the fastest race car on the market, I guaranty you’ll win races with it… as soon as you buy the additional performance race engine because at the moment it only has a two stroke engine.”

  8. Yes and I don’t wanna know how is possible to work on a 12 Inch screen with a 4K resolution.. I mean Photoshop and other applications…

But I think the design of the Ultrabook is great! It looks very awesome. So slim with this color keyboard! 🙂

  9. The other thing is battery life! This machine is so slimm and has a i7 with a 4K multitouch screen. Battery live maybe 3-4 hours.

I can not use this thing for work. I use a thinkpad with extra battery packs 😉

  10. This “external GPU” seems like the biggest change i have seen to PCs since i was a kid in the 80s… the idea that you can essentially ‘externalize’ your CPU over a cable. Amazing!

I know there have always been ways to boost computational power. But none of them, that I can remember, ever involved just plugging something in to a standard i/o port.

If I am writing software, and it needs to grind on a lot of data, this would definitely capture my imagination. GPUs have becoming more and more “General Purpose” paralell processors that can work on any data. I remember laughing at the idea you could plug your phone into your TV and use it as a computer. But … plug your phone into a GPU farm,…. you could in theory do some amazing stuff.

I have an Atari TT on my shelf which has an external video card in a box. That thing was built in 1990 or so.

Nope, it will not run Fallout 4.
