HP Reverb VR Headset Review!

We test and review the HP Reverb, a Windows Mixed Reality headset that has the sharpest display we’ve seen so far in a consumer virtual reality headset. We compare its clarity to the displays of the original Rift and Rift S, in games like Rec Room, Space Pirate Trainer, and Elite Dangerous. This resolution bump is truly impressive, though the headset isn’t without its faults.

  1. Microsoft goofed by not launching WMR 2.0 alongside the HoloLens 2. The Reverb would have made a great candidate for it. Windows Mixed Realty 2.0 is rumored to be launching sometime next year, and HP is rumored to be working on another headset for it.

In Microsoft’s defense WMR has only been out for a year and a half. It took Oculus three years to launch an entirely new headset. These new WMR headsets should be thought of like the Vive Pro (two years after the original Vive) in that the system is the same but some things like resolution and ergonomics are improved.

Not in Microsoft’s defense, the WMR controllers are dog sh*t. Functional at best? But coming from the company that also produces the Xbox, the WMR controllers are inexcusably awful. (Yes the OEMs produce the controllers themselves, but are based on reference designs from Microsoft.)
