I couldn’t get through the movie when it was on video, *many* yeas ago. It was a terrible premise, arguably worse than Space Dogs. I’m more interested in the conversations at Tested about why this movie was chosen to feature 🙂
In the UK we don’t do summer camps (on account of summer being rationed after world-war II) so perhaps this has a greater connection with a domestic US audience. But what is the excuse for Space Dogs?
When I think about movies of this era; TRON, Flight of the Navigator, Looker (Michael Crichton, much overlooked and perhaps relevant today for easily being an early Black Mirror concept) they pushed interest in computing technology.
Simple fantasy aside, the visuals in those
movies (TRON in particular) sparked my personal interest in synthetic environments and a
career in computing. Culturally they started technical conversations which seemed appealing and achievable.
Hopefully Close Encounters will be in the mix somewhere, the culture of UFOs, secrecy and conspiracy theory should be rich pickings. And Kip Thorn’s/Christopher Nolan’s movie Interstellar; there’s a movie that gave back to astrophysics and computer science with it’s work on light-beam propagation through curved space-time. And it’s the movie that ruined “wormholes” in every other movie and TV show before it with it’s simple “duh” explanation of what a hole in 3D space would look like.
I was at the Huntsville Space Camp while they were filming the movie. I remember watching them film a couple of scenes, and we were all extras in a scene that got cut. I remember the moon chair vividly, and seeing space suit testing in a huge water tank.
The movie was bad, but Space Camp was awesome.
