Adam Savage’s One Day Builds: Eric Idle’s Guitar Case!
When Eric Idle of Monty Python and Spamalot fame Tweeted asking for help in adapting his “little padded case” for his Danny Ferrington travel guitar, Adam immediately raised his hand. After flying to LA to meet with Eric and fetch the case, Adam returned to San Francisco and started this One Day Build. Seven frantic working hours later, a solid case was born.

The sped up sewing machine sounds just like my impact driver.
I don’t usually comment, but wanted to thank you for including the “soft” crafts in the making space. Working with cloth is so often overlooked among the metalworking, plus the beeping of arduinos and the whir of servos, etc. (Also, it makes me giggle when you call us ‘sewists’ I assume because ‘sewer’ is too close to ‘sewer’.)
For finishing that lid, I would have sewn the outer layers + plywood and then whip-stitched that felt lining into place, folding the seam allowances in and under as I went to give a more finished look. Great looking bag, though!
Fun to watch. I have no doubt that a future version 2.0 of this case would be amazing to see/revisit.
I have to admire the balls of Adam being like “Ok… Eric needs this in like 3 days. I’m in LA, so need to get back to SF first, also gotta allow some time to get it to him… Plus x, y, z, that gives me about 8 hours of work time… SURE! I can totally do that!”
Fricking nutcase son of a diddly. And a legend. 12/10
That was great, but now I want to know about the Ark of the Covenant lid in the background, as well as that large wooden cart on wheels, with the black front behind his sewing machine. Is that a giant speaker?
As for the black-fronted thing on wheels:

Thanks for that. Looks pretty cool, I just hope he doesn’t trip over the cable!
I bet he could do a sweet Captain Adamerica recovery roll lol
Is the Ark going to be a featured not-even-close-to-One-Day Build sometime? That’s a prop I’d love to work on, even though I’m not a prop person much.
OK, I admit this is just brilliant just like Eric Idle.
Brilliant! A very well thought out and engineered piece of equipment. I’ve loved that sewing table for quite some time and have planned on making one. I’ve recently received a credenza that I plan to convert into a sewing table. Although, I don’t plan on adding wheels. Thanks for the inspiration.
Imagine what could’ve been achieved if he had had three days.
Cool
The handle is on the wrong side…. But still an excellent build
I hope this will be a build we can buy the plan for, so I can scale it up for my own guitars
Adam, great video. Please do more one day builds. I could watch them all day .
Thanks
That Janome is struggling. Looks like it’s time to buy a Sailrite.
I’m curious what kind of foam Adam used in this build. Also, is there a way to purchase a large stock of it at a reasonable price.
huh, haven’t seen the giant swiss army knife before
I’ve made an account just to say this, because it really bothers me with these videos. Every single video there’s just the ONE thing that happens during editing that drives me crazy.
Music in these videos is so freaking inconsistent, and always just shows up at random points in the video. It’s never during a major part of a build process, and is always in a very awkward way that has no point whatsoever.
I really do think that it should be either completely gone, or really just go for it and use music in the whole video.
And while this is a complaint that I have I still really do love all of these videos, and am really glad that you guys make this content with Adam.
Keep up the good work guys!
Adam should post the clip of unrolling the felt to r/oddlysatisfying, because the way that all came together was magical.
I also liked how the figures for the ark of the covenant were coming along. Great work.
Mr. Adam Savage!
I was (am still in syndication) a great of Mythbusters and of Monty Python’s Flying Circus! I, myself, dabble in the airt of casemaking having built flight cases. I reveled in the pleasure of watching you make Eric Idle’s guitar case. I found myself leaning in and biting my tongue right along with you, while shouting out advice just before you did what I wished.
My love of being commissioned, drawing out a plan, engineering it, piecing out the parts and assembling it was strengthened by watching you.
I am addicted to your videos now!
I’d listen to an album of Adam playing the guitar any day.
Awesome work, Adam. I am thinking of doing a project that needs a quilted fabric to simulate the wall padding seen in Hollywood spacecraft and habitats… like the ones seen in “The Martian”. I’ve looked high and low here in Cincinnati. Then my mouth fell open when I saw this video. I noticed you were working with the perfect stuff. What is it (is there a manufacturers product number) and where did you source it?
Thanks! And… Make On!!!
